Description
(ModeL) J. W, MBAKER.
1 FASTENING FOR BAGS, POCKET BOOKS, 6m. 7 No. 2765852. Patented May 1,1883.
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN w. MEAKER, on PHILADELPHIA, PENNSFLVANIA.
FASTENING FOR BAGS, POCKET-BQOKSLS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,852, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed February 27, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. MEAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Bags, Pocket Books, 8150., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fastening for a bag embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 show the fastening as applied to pocketbooks. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modification. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of another modification, partly sectional. Fig. 6 is a section of a portion in liner: 1:, Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a section of a portion in line to 20, Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is a section of a portion in line at at, Fig. 3. Fig. 9 is a top view of a portion of Figs. 4 and 5. Fig. 10 is a section in-lineyy, Fig. 4. Fig. 11 is a section in line 2 z, Fig. 5. Fig. 12 is a section of a portion in line i) c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of thejaws of a bag, pocket-book, 810., having an additional jaw to which part of a fastening device is applied, and which by its yielding nature causes the secure engagement of said device with another fastening part or device on the bag, 850., the jaws of the bag, 8m, being generally termed the frame of the same.
Referring to the drawings, A A the jaws of a bag or pocket-book, to body of the bag or book is riveted represent which the or otherwise secured, as usual.
B represents an additional jaw, which is pivoted to the ends of the jaws A at the place of pivoting the two jaws A A to each other, or, ifdesired, above said place, said j awB inclosing the jaws A A, and having a motion independent thereof.
To the under side of the jaw B, at the center thereof, is secured a clip, 0, which extends transversely, so as to overhang the jaws A A, the outer end of said clip having a nose, a, which is adapted to engage with the jaw A, as more clearly shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8.
When the bag or book is opened and is to be closed, the jaw A and jaw B are moved to gether toward the jaw A, and when the clip (J reaches said jaw A the nose at rides on the latter and causes the elevation of the clip, this being permitted by the elastic or yielding nature of thejaw B. As soon as the nose clears the edge of the jaw A the clip drops against said edge and causes the engagement of the jaws A and B, andconsequently the locking of the jaws A A, thus holding the bag or book securely closed.
In order to open the book, the jaw B is forced away from the jaw A, thus overcoming the holding-power of the olipand separating the jaws A A.
In Fig. l the jaw B is on the outside of a bag, and in Fig. 2 on the outside of a pocketbook. In Fig. 3 the jaws are covered by the flap b of a pocket-book, and in all these cases the upper face of the jaw B is left smooth. Furthermore, the jaw B is applied in position after the body of the bag or book and jaws B are rivetedor otherwise connected.
In Fig. 6, 0 represents a piece for contact of the forefinger in opening and closing the pocket-book.
In Fig. -7 a pin having ahead or knob, d, is secured to the jaw A, and passed freely through an openingin the side of thejaw B, the knob limiting the motion of said jaw B from said jaw A, and also forming a place of contact for the forefinger.
In Figs. 4 and 10 a divided plate, B, with knobs B, is employed, the two parts being secured to the two jaws A A, the central portions thereof, and raised from said jaws. A vertical opening, 6, is formed in the jaw A, and a pin, f, secured to the jaw A at a place coinciding with said opening a. Whenthe jaws A A approach, the pin f raises the jaw A until the opening eis just above said pin f,- then the jaw A drops, the pin enters the opening, and the two jaws are locked.
In Figs. 5 and 11 two pins or studs fand two openings e are employed, the operation, however, being similar to that shown in Figs.
respectively, at
4 and 10. In these two cases, however, the two knobs B the jaws.
Where the jaws A A B have a common pivot, each pivot may be double-ended, as
are simply employed to open shown by the dotted figure at theleft ofFig. 1, I
the jaws A A being fitted on one end and the jaw B fitted on the other end, the central head orwasher of the pivot separating the jaws A A from the jaw B at'the pivotal ends; but wherethe jaw B is pivoted independently of the jaws A A, separate pivots are evidently employed.
I am aware that it is not new to provide pocket-book frames with spring-catches and spring-clips, and therefore do not claim the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A frame for a bag, pocket-book, &c., provided with an additional jaw of yielding nature, and a fastening device, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2; A frame for a bag, pocket-book, &c., 20
formed of jaws, in combinationwith an additional jaw connected with said jaws, adapted to yield, and a fastening device, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A frame for a bag, pocket-book, &c., pro- 2 5 vided with an additionaljaw of yielding nature, substantially as described, to which is attached a clip, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A frame for a bag, pocket-book, &c., pro- 0 Witnesses:
