PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL w. WILKINS, or BOSTON,MASSAOHUSETTS.
SHIELD FOR SHlRT-STUDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,741,
dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed March 12, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL lV. WILKINS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk andState of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Shield for Shirt-Studs, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The objectof my invention is to provide a new and improved device for preventing the screws or spirals of shirt-studs from irritating the skin and cutting holes in the underwear.
The invention consists in a shield, into which the screw or spiral of the stud can be screwed after having been passed through the aperture in the shirt-bosom, whichjshield is preferably constructed of two disks secured to each other at the edges, one of which disks is provided with an aperture, through which the screw oi the stud can he passed.
' Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front view of part of a shirtbosoin the stud-spirals in which are passed into my improved shield for shirt-studs. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on the line at a, Fig l. Fig. 3 is a face view of theshield.
Two disks, A, of leather, cloth, or analogous material, are sewed together at the'edges, or secured together at the edges in any other suitable manner, one of which disks is provided with an aperture, a, in the middle. If desired,
a disk of thin metal can be held between the ting holes in the underwear.
two disks to prevent the screw or spiral B of the, shirtstud (J from being forced through the disks. The shield formed of the disks A is held on the back of the shirt-bosom D in such a manner that the screw or spiral B passed through the aperture in the bosom can pass into the aperture a in the shield, and is then screwed into the shield, as shown in Fig. 2. The shield prevents the endor point of the screw or spiral from irritating the skin or cut- The shield also assists in preventing accidental unscrewing of the stud,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Ashield for shirt-studsanade substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a disk to which the inner end of the spiral or screw of the stud can be screwed after the same has been passed through the aperture in the shirt-bosom, as set forth.
2. Ashield for shirt-studs, made of two disks of cloth, leather, or like material, attached to each other at the edges, one of which disks is provided with an aperture, substantially as herein shown and described, and-for the purpose set forth.
Boston, March 8, 1883.
