Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV JACOB LESSER, OF FRANKFbRT-ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY, ASSIGN'OR TO ROBERT E. LESTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PROCESS OF COLORING GLUE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N01 276,609, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed March 29, 1883. (No specimens.)
Tocll whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV JACOB LES- SER, of Frankfort-on-thedllain, Germany, have invented an Improved Process of Colorin g Glue, of which the following is a specification.
Common black or dark glue, while possessing all the adhesive and other essential qualities of fine colored glue, has heretofore, owing to its color, been confined in its use to such purposes in the arts as where color was not essential.
The object of this invention is to color such glue so that it is both refined and tinted, and may be used for various purposes in the arts. It will be especially applicable in the manufacture of sizing and finishing compounds for paper-hangings, compounds for the manufacture of elastic rolls, for glue and size compounds for finishing yarns, textile fabrics of silk, cotton, &c., for the manufacture of calcimines and wall-coverings, for glue to be used with colored woods, and for all other purposes where a fine strong colored glue is required.
Forfcoloringcom mou black or dark glue 1 take a poundand a half of liquid extract of lead and mix it i'nto the water in which the glue has been soaked, as follows: thirteen pounds of glue, sixty-three and a quarter pounds of water. I allow the glue to soak for about twenty-four hours, when I dilute it by a slow fire, and when heated I gradually pour in one and a. half pound of the extract of leadandmix it well together.
sanie may be varied to some extent without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isi l, The improved colored glue herein de scribed, composed of common glue and a lead couipound, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a solution of glue with liquid extract of lead, substantially as described.
6. The process of coloring glue and gelatine herein described by treating a solution of glue or ,glatine with a lead solution, as described. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GUSTAV JAGOB'LESSER.
