J. JETT.
COMBINED STOCK AND CASE FOR FIRE ARMS. No.. 276,593. v Patented May 1,1888.
. view of the same.
NITED STATES PATENT FFICEG JOHN JETT, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,593, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed January 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN JETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a Combined Stock and Case for Fire-Arms, of which the following is a specification. The object of my invention is to produce a stock for fire-arms which can also be used for a case or holder.
it consists in providing ta metallic stock of suitable form, which is fastened to the case with rivets or otherwise. The arm is provided with a handle, the same as fora pistol, to which the metallic stock can be attached.
Figure 1 in the annexed drawings represents a side view of the invention. 7
Fig. 3 is a side view when used as a case. Fig. 4 is a side view when used as a stock. Fig. 5 is a side view of a plan in which the handle of the arm is received inside or below the metallic stock.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The case 0 is made the same as for a pistol. The flap which covers the handle of the arm is not shown in the drawings, but is arranged the same as in an ordinary case. A second button may be used to secure the end of the flap when the arm is not in the case. The length of the case may be greater or less than the metallic stock B, which extends along the top of the case to the large end, thence around the case on one or both sides, (shown in Figs. 1 and 2,) and may extend along the under side of the case, if required. It is fastened to the case with rivets, or screws, or other like eontrivance.
The arm is provided with a handle, D, the

same as for'a pistol, and has a dovetail groove along its bottom, in which the end of the stock is made to fit, forming a complete stock for the arm, as shown in Fig. 4. The stock is held into the groove by a spring, .9, which is fastened to the handle inside the groove, and extends to the outside of the handle at b. This spring engages a notch in the stock at c, and is released by bearing on the spring at I). A spring-bolt or set-screw can be used instead of the spring.
Fig. 5 is a plan in which the stock extends above the handle, and is turned slightly to one side to allow a free passage of the arm into In this plan the stock may be fastened to the case at each end only. The butt end is fastened to the flap, and the other end is fastened to the case near the notch c, in which case the stock will swing to one side when the flap is raised to receive the arm.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In a combined stock and case for fire-arms, the metallic stock B, having its end formed into a dovetail tongue adapted to fit a dovet-ail groove in the handle ofthe arm D, to which the stock is attached, forming a complete stock for the fire-arm, as shown, in which the stock is adapted to fit against the case 0 by extending along the top of the case to its large end, then extending down around thecase on one or both sides, in which position it is fastened to the case with rivets or screws, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN J ETT.
