TRUNK-STRAP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 276,466, dated April 24, 1883. Application filed October 2, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. PUTNAM, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Trunk-Straps; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved strap for fastening down the lid of trunks to prevent them from being burst open from the rough handling which they receive during transportation; and to this end it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangementof the strap, forming a new article ofmanufacture, as hereinafter fully described.
Figure l is a view of the strap applied to the trunk, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the strap itself when detached.
A represents the body portion of the strap which passes around the trunk. This portion is made of fibrous woven webbing of heavy thickness and from one and a halfto two inches in width. One end of this webbing is secured to a ring, 0, and the other end passes loosely through or is looped in another ring, 0, and is then doubled back upon itself and attached to a buckle-frame, B, which slips upon the body portion of the strap. To one of the rings, U,a1eather thong, D, is permanently attached.
Now, when the strap is to be applied to the trunk the buckle-frame B is adjusted so as to take up or lengthen the body portion of the strap, according to the size of the trunk, and bring the two rings G 0 within five or six inches of each other after the strap is around the trunk. The leather thong is then laced through the two rings with several folds or convolutions, and then by pulling upon the end of thethong the rings are drawn together by an action similarto a block-and-tackle movement, and the strap tightened about the trunk, so as to firmly and securely hold itself in place. Theend ofthe thong is then tied, as shown, or secured in any other suitable manner.
Now. I am aware that trunkstraps made entirely of leather have heretofore been used, 50
and that the separate features of my invention are not new in themselves.
The advantages of my strap, as a new article of manufacture, may be found in its adjustability to any size truck, and also in the combination of the woven webbing and the leather thong, the webbing serving to clamp the trunk more tightly without scarring it, and not being liable to become stiff and diflicult to manipulate from being wet, as is the case with leather, the thong serving also to make a secure and always ready connection for the two ends.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- As an improved article of manufacture, a
trunk-strap composed of a body-section, A, of
fibrous woven webbing,with double or looped end, having adjustable buckle-frame B, rings 0 U, and leather thong D, as shown and described.
