HAIR WAVING IMPLEMENT Filed Dec. 3, 1954 INVENTOR Auoasw w. EGAu hz.
HAIR WAVlNG lMPLEMENT Andrew W. Egan, Jr., Tarawa Terrace, N. C.
Application December 3,1954, Serial No. 472,858
2 Claims; '(Cl. 132-142) This invention relates to a hair waving implement and has for its primary object to facilitate the setting of a wave in the hair of the user.
Another object is to enable the hair waving combs employed in the implement to be readily extracted therefrom for cleaning or replacement.
A further object is to enable combs having teeth of dilferent characters to be employed and to stagger the teeth of the combs to facilitate the production of a wave in the hair of the user.
The above and other objects may be attained by employing this invention which embodies among its features juxtaposed comb backs, a row of comb teeth carried by each comb back and extending laterally outwardly therefrom, and means engaging the comb backs and holding the teeth in one row of teeth in staggered relation to the teeth in an adjacent row of teeth.
Other features include a holder, juxtaposed combs mounted in said holder, and means carried by the holder and engaging opposite ends of the combs for holding the teeth of one comb in staggered relation to the teeth of an adjacent comb.
Still other features include a holder having spaced parallel side bars, end walls carried by the side bars and extending therebetween adjacent opposite ends of the holder, stop flanges carried by the end walls and extending inwardly therefrom adjacent the ends thereof remote from the side bars, spacers of differing depths mounted adjacent the end walls and engaging the stop flanges, and juxtaposed combs inserted in the holder between the side bars and against the spacers with the teeth of one comb staggered with relation to the teeth of an adjacent comb.
Still other features include a cover carried by the side bars for closing the upper side of the holder and engaging the backs of the combs to retain the combs in the holder, and means to enable the cover to be opened clear of the space between the side bars and end walls to facilitate the introduction of combs into and removal of combs from the holder.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hair waving implement embodying the features of this invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, a group of combs are arranged in juxtaposed parallel relation with their backs 12 disposed adjacent one another, as will be readily understood upon reference to the drawings. The comb backs carry comb teeth 14 which project laterally outwardly therefrom and in certain instances the backs may be secured permanently together in such a manner United States Patent 0 Patented Sept. 4, 1956 2 that the row of teeth 14 carried by one comb 'will'lie in staggered relation to the row of teeth of an adjacent comb 'to define between the teeth sinuous passages 16 (Fig. 5) in which are received the strands of hair .H
during the combing operation thereof.
While, as previously described, the combs may be permanently secured together with the teeth 14 thereof in staggered relation, as illustrated in. Figures 4 and 5, I prefer to support the combsin staggered relation to one another so that when-occasion arises, a comb may be removed for cleansing or replacement without disturbing theother combs in the group of combs 10. To this end, -I employ a holder designated generally '18 which comprises spaced parallel side bars 20which are joined at their ends by end walls 22 which project outwardly from the side bars 20 adjacent opposite ends of the holder. Carried by the end Walls and extending inwardly therefrom adjacent the ends thereof remote from the side bars 20 are stop flanges 24 and seated on the stop flanges 24 and lying adjacent the end walls 22 are spacers 26 having elongated longitudinal grooves 28 extending therethrough to define slots in which opposite ends of the combs 10 are received, as will be readily understood upon reference to the drawings. The holder thus far described will serve very well for holding the combs in proper position but in the preferred form of the invention I employ closures for the open upper side of the holder defined between the side bars 20.
The cover above referred to comprises inverted channel-shaped cover members 30 carrying adjacent opposite ends pivot pins 32 which extend through the side flanges of the cover members 30 adjacent opposite ends of the holder 18, and these pivots 32 extend through elongated longitudinal slots 34 formed in the side bars 20 adjacent opposite ends thereof. Suitable finger holds 36 are carried by the ends of the cover members 30 remote from the pivots 32 to facilitate the moving of the cover members to open position.
In use, the cover members 30 are moved longitudinally away from one another with the pivots 32 moving outwardly toward the ends of the slots 34 adjacent the end walls 22. With the covermembers 30 thus moved apart, they may be swung outwardlylo open position substantially as illustrated in broken lines in Figure 2 to render fully accessible the space between the side bars 20 and the end walls 22. Combs of selected construction may then be introduced into the holder with opposite ends of the combs engaging the spacers which hold the combs in proper position to cause the row of teeth carried by one comb to lie in staggered relation to the row of teeth carried by an adjacent comb. After introducing the combs into the holder, the cover members 30 are moved to closed position, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, and slid longitudinally toward one an other to completely enclose the backs 12 of the combs. With the combs thus mounted in the holder, the implement may be used to comb the hair and the strands of hair engaged by the staggered teeth 14 will through repeated combing become waved. Obviously, a comb may be removed for replacement or cleaning simply by opening the covers and extracting the selected comb.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
l. A hair waving implement which includes a holder having spaced parallel side bars, end walls carried by'the side bars and extending therebetween adjacent opposite ends of the holder, stop flanges carried by the end walls and extending inwardly therefrom adjacent the ends thereof remote from the side bars, spacers of differing depths mounted adjacent the end walls and engaging the stop flanges, juxtaposed combs inserted in the holder between the side bars and against the spacers with the teeth of one comb staggered with relation to the teeth of an adjacent comb, and a cover closing the upper side of the holder and engaging the backs of the combs to retain the combs in the holder and carried by the side bars for movement from the closing position to an open position.
'2. A hair waving implement which includes a holder having spaced parallel side bars, end walls carried by the side bars and extending therebetween adjacent opposite ends of the holder; stop flanges carried by the end walls and extending inwardly therefrom adjacent the ends thereof remote from the side bars, spacers of dif- 4 fering depths mounted adjacent the end walls and engaging the stop flanges, juxtaposed combs inserted in the holder between the side bars and against the spacers with the teeth of one comb staggered with relation to the teeth of an adjacent comb, and cover members carried by the side bars for movement longitudinally therealong from closedpositions in which they lie parallel to the side bars and adjacent the comb backs to open positions in which they extend perpendicularly to the side bars adjacent the end walls and clear of the space between the side bars.
