NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER OASWELL, OF NAPOLEON, MISSOURI.
VEHICLE-AXLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,994, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed December 26, 1882. '(N0 model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER OAsWELL, of Napoleon, in the county of La Fayette and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful I mprovementin Vehicle-Axles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed draw in gs, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to solid metallic axles for vehicles; and the invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the axle, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, partly in section.
The axle A, which is preferably to be made of steel, is constructed with a double T- shaped body, B, to secure the greatest strength with the greatest economy of material. The central orconnecting web, 0, is made slightly wider 20 at D than throughout its length on account of the perforations E for the bolts by which the hounds and bolster are to be secured to the axle.
I do not brbadly claim a cast-metal axle. z 5
What I claim is- A straight cast-metal axle having the body B formed with a narrow central web, 0, which is made with wider portions at D for the perforations E, substantially as shown and de- 0 scribed.
WALTER GASWELL.
