Description

(N0 M'odel SQILMOORB. BED BOTTOM. N 275,690. Patented A pr.'10, 1883.
WWW z Y .ATTORN EYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLON E. MOORE, OF S WANTON, VERMONT.
BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 275,690, dated April 10, 1883.
Application filed March 3, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be 'it known that I, SoLoN E. Moons, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Swanton, in the county of Franklin and Stateof Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a top or plan view of my improved bed-springs. Fig. 2- is side view of the same.
This invention has relation to spring bedbottoms; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the upper whirl of the spiral spring in elongated form, consisting of circular sides and parabolic or elliptic end continued from the circular sides by concave curves; and the invention further consists in combining a number of such springs together in oblique position uponthe slats of a bedstead, whereby the convex side of the upper whirl of each spring will be opposite the concave curves and elongations of the laterally-adjacent springs, all as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates a spiral bed-spring having an elongated upper or bearing whirl, which is formed by turning the circular sides I) outward by concave bends c, forming parabolic or elliptic ends 01, the extremity of the wire being connected to the circular portion of the whirl by means of a loop, 6. Each side of the whirl on which the bed rests is therefore formed with a concave bends c. To a series of parallel slats, g, these springs are connected, and they are arranged in parallel oblique position, so that the convex side b of the upper whirl of each spring will be opposite the concave bends and elongations of the laterally-adjacent springs. By
this arrangement, owing to the form of the elongated double-curved whirls of the springs, the breadth of the intervals between the springs is equalized and rendered nearly uniform throughout the spring bearing-surface; and it is designed hereby to obviate any tendency of the bedding to bag downward or fall between the springs.
Havingdescribed thisinvention,what1claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bed-spring having an elongated upper whirl, consisting of circular sides and parabolic or elliptic ends continued from the circular sides by concave bends, the extremity of the elongated whirl being connected to the circular portion of the spring, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the parallel slats of a bedstead, of a number of spiral springs having oblique parallel elongated upper whirls consisting of circular sides and parabolic ends, whereby the convex side of each spring is opposite the concave bends and elongations of the laterally-adjacentsprings, and the breadth of the interval between the springs is equalized throughout the spring bearing-surface consisting of said elongated upper whirls, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses SOLON E. MOORE.
