ATENT MUFF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,373, dated April 10, *1883,
Application led January 6, 1883.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HATTIE ANDEM FARNs- WORTH, a citizen of the United States and of the State of New York, residing in the city of New York, in the'county and State lof New York, have invented a new and usef'ul Improvement in Muffs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same; and I hereby further declare that the follow ing is a specification thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part-of this specification.
This invention relates to a mutt-band which is joined to and made a part of the common round muff.
The muif-band consists of a central flat strip of stiff material covered on both sides with a strip of fur or other suitable material, and a flat strip of elastic material, the two strips being joined together so as to make a band or circle.
The muff-band is to be joined to the muffand made a part thereof in the following manner:
The central strip is placed so as to lie flat along one side ofthe muff, and to extend from one end ofthe mu to the other. One end of the elastic strip is to be fastened in any suitable manner to one end of the central strip, and the elastic strip, is then made to pass underneath the lining of the muff lengthwise through the muff, and is joined to the opposite end ofthe central strip, so as to complete the band. In the manufacture of the muffs the elastic strip forming part of the mutt-band can conveniently be placed in its proper position, as hereinbefore described, before or at the time when the muff is lined, and the joining together of the elastic and central strips of the mutt-band can be done when the mutt' is otherwise nished, the necessary openings in the lining of the mutt, at each end thereof, having been left.
The object of the invention is to enable ladies and children safely and conveniently to secure or carry their mutts, and at the same time to have the freedom of their hands whenever such freedom is desired.
The :nuff-band is used by slipping` it over the hand or arm, which may be readily and conveniently done by reason ofthe elastic nature of the material of which one of the com- (No model.)
ponent parts of the band is made, and which allows the central strip to be raised the neces` sary distance from the surface ofthe muff without effort, and without drawing the muff out of shape. I The central stri p of the mutt-band, when the same is not in use, will appear as an ornamental strip of fur or other suitable material lying iiat on one side of the muif, and extending` from one end of the muft' to the other.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.l
Figure l represents a perspective View or" my improved muff when in use. Fig. 2 represents .a longitudinal section through the muif-band and muff. Fig. 3 represents aperspcctive view of my muff-band complete.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
ln the drawings, the letter A, Fig. l, designates the central strip of the muff-band, the same being composed of a strip of stiif material covered with a strip of fur or other suitable material on both sides. The letter B designates the body of the muif, the same being'the common round muff of suitable size and mate rial; and the letter D designates the lining of the m uff.
In Fig. 2 the letter C designates the elastic strip of themuff-band,the said strip being composed of a strip of any suitable kind of elastic material. The letters E E designate the points where the two said strips composing the muff- `band are joined together, the same being done in any suitable manner. rIhe letters A, B, and D designate the same parts referred to and described above in connection with Fig. l.
In Fig. 3 the same letters designate corresponding parts, as hereinbefore set forth.
In manufacture the part of the muE-band designated by the letter Gis placed in any suitable and convenient manner between the lining ofthe muft' D and the exterior portion of the muf B, as shown in Fig. 2. Suitable openings are to be left in the lining of the muif D, l
through which the ends of the strip C may be passed, and when the muff is otherwise complete the ends of the strip C can be fastened to the ends of the strip A by sewing, or in any suitable and convenient manner.`
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The muftband consisting of a central ilat strip of stiff material covered on both sides with a strip of fur or other suitable material, and a'flat strip of elastic material, the two strips being joined together so as to make a band or circle.
2. The muff-band, of the form, material, and construction hereinbefore described, joined to and made a part of the common round muff', in the manner hereinbefore described.
In testimony WhereofI have hereunto set my 1o HENRY W. SAGKETT, GEORGE J. CHAMBERS.
