3 Claims. (Cl. 112-252) This invention relates to a combined thread holder and cutter and has as its primary object the provision of a de vice which is adapted to be applied to a sewing machine in convenient reach of an operator and utilized by the latter in eflecting severance of a thread being wound on a bobbin and which will then serve as a temporary holder for the end portion of the length of thread fed from a spool thereof subject to being later removed by the operator as for attachment to another bobbin for winding thereon.
It is well known in winding bobbins on sewing machines severance of the thread on completion of the winding operation ordinarily leaves the loose length of thread fed from the spool thereof in a dangling condition such that it occasionally becomes entangled with the moving driving belt of the machine and thereby cause unwanted unwinding of the thread from its spood and thereby resulting in a considerable loss of thread as well as loss of time in stopping operation of the machine to disengage the entangled thread. The purpose of the invention is to obviate the above stated difiiculties.
With the foregoing object and purpose in view, together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, the invention resides in the parts and in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the bobbin winding portion of a sewing machine showing the invention as applied;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bobbin winding mechanism with the thread holding and cutting device associated therewith;
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the upper portion of the thread holder and cutter;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. '5 is a rear side view of the structure shown in Figs. 3 and 4;
Fig. 6 is a view in front elevation showing a modified form of the thread holder and cutter;
Fig. 7 is a front side view of the structure shown in Fig. 6; and
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the structure shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
Referring to the drawing more specifically A indicates generally the conventional bobbin winding mechanism of an ordinary sewing machine B which embodies a revoluble spindle C for the reception of a bobbin D. The spindle C is journalled in a tiltable bearing E and is fitted with a grooved wheel F arranged to be moved in and out of operative engagement with the driving belt G of the sewing machine B in the well known manner. The spindle C has a longitudinally divided free outer end on which the bobbin D is removably mounted by shoving the bobbin over the end of the spindle into frictional engagement with the spindle.
The bobbin winding mechanism embodies a peripherially grooved direction roller H around which is passed the thread I leading from a spool (not shown) and from States Patent ice which the thread J is directed to the bobbin on the spindle. The roller H is remotely spaced from the spindle C so that a considerable length of the thread will lead from the roller H to the bobbin during the bobbin winding operation. It is this length of the thread which is severed on filling of a bobbin and is ordinarily accomplished by manually breaking the thread after which the thread leading from the roller H is released and allowed to dangle freely until grasped by the operator and secured to another bobbin, or rewound on its spool or otherwise disposed of.
The present invention resides in a combined thread holding and cutting device K which is designed to be mounted on the table portion L of the sewing machine B at a point intermediate but in laterally outward off-set relation to the spindle C and the roller H where the por tion of the thread extending between the roller H and the bobbin D on the spindle C may be readily pulled laterally by the operator into engagement with the thread holding and cutting device K.
In carrying out the invention the device K is formed to embody a metallic head portion comprising a pair of rigidly interconnected jaws 10 and 11 of rectangular cross section which jaws diverge relative to each other from their pointof interconnection both laterally and longitudinally. The jaw 10 is fixed on a standard 12, being here shown as formed in continuation thereof. The standard is provided with a base 13 by which it may be secured to the sewing machine table L.
The jaws 10-11 are preferably arcuate in the direction of their lengths and are arranged with the open space 14 between their divergent portions presented toward the thread J. A feature of the invention resides in arranging the connected rear side margins of the jaws 10-11 in intimate contact with each other for a portion of their lengths from their point of interconnection thus forming a sharp pointed V-notch 15 at the intersection of the jaws on the rear side only thereof and from which the jaws diverge laterally toward the opposite side thereof. The notch 15 constitutes a means for etfecting wedge engagement with a thread drawn into the notch.
Formed at the juncture of the spaced apart side margins of jaws 10-11 is a cutting edge 16 for effecting severance of a thread drawn thereagainst.
As shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 the cutting edge 16 is formed by beveling the side margins of the arcuate joined portion 17 of the jaws as indicated at 18 thus forming an acute angled knife edge along the inner margin of the side edges of such arcuate portion.
In the construction shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 the jaws 10-11 are pinched together along one side margin thereof at the juncture thereof as indicated at 19 and the cutting edge 16 is formed by recessing the side margins of the jaws at their juncture as by grinding or filing as indicated at 20. In this instance a right angled corner is formed of sufficient sharpness to sever a thread pulled thereagainst.
In the operation of the invention when it is desired to sever the length of thread leading to the bobbin D from the roller H the operator grasps such length and pulls it into the space 14 between the jaws 10-11 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 so as to cause the thread to become wedged and secured in the V-notch 15. With the same or continued movement the operator pulls the thread against the knife or cutting edge 16 so as to effect severance of the thread. The bobbin may then be removed and replaced.
The end portion of the thread leading from its spool around the roller H will then be held against dangling and in a position where it may be readily grasped by the.
operator and pulled out of engagement with the V-notch 15 when it is desired to attach it to another bobbin or to rewind it.
We claim:
1. In a thread holding and cutting device, a pair of fixedly connected jaws diverging both laterally and longitudinally relative to each other with the margins of said jaws on one side thereof abutting to form a thread receiving and gripping notch, and with the margins of the opposite sides of the jaws spaced apart and joined together by an arcuate wall formed with a thread cutting inner margin.
2. In a thread holding and cutting attachment for I mounting on the table of a sewing machine, a standard, a base on said standard adapted to seat on and be secured to a table, a pair of rigidly united jaws on said standard formed in longitudinal continuation of each other with one of said jaws formed in continuation of said standard,
said jaws diverging both laterally and longitudinally relative to each other with the margins of one side of the jaws abutting each other at their united ends to form a thread gripping and holding V-notch at one side margin of the jaws, and a thread cutter formed on the margin of the juncture at the other margin of said jaws.
3. A thread holder and cutter comprising a standard, a base on said standard adapted to seat on and be secured to a table, a longitudinally arcuate jaw fixed on said standard and formed in longitudinal continuation of the upper end thereof, a second longitudinally arcuate jaw overlying said first named j'aw, an arcuate wall rigidly connecting the inner ends of said jaws and formed in continuation thereof, said jaws being of rectangular cross section and having their margins at one side thereof in intimate contact with each other for a portion of their lengths forming a sharp pointed thread gripping V-notch from which said jaws diverge relative to each other both laterally and longitudinally and a thread cutting edge formed on the margin of said arcuate wall at the side of said jaws opposite said V-notch.
