Description
IJV VEJWIUR/S (No Model.) Y j T. RUNGEMAG-,Hqv E. OSHE. ATTACHMENT POR PAUGBTS; No. 274,996.V Patented Apr-. 3
WI TJV` ESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEOBALD F. UNGEMACH AND EDWARD OSHE, OF ZANESVILLE, OHIO,
ATTACH MEN-r Fo R FAUCETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,996, dated April 3, 18813.
Application tiled December T, 1982. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, T. F. UNGEMACH and E. OSHE, citizens of the United States, residu ing at Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State ot' Ohio, have invented a new and `useful Attachment for Faucets,of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This'invention relates to an improved atf` tachment for faucets, the objects ot' which are to prevent waste by leakage or dripping when the stop-,cock is turned, and also to prevent insects, as well as dust and other impurities, from entering and settling in the stop-cock.
Our invention therefore consistsin the im proved constructions ofthe said faucetattachment, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure lis a perspective view of our improved faucetat tachment removed from the faucet. Fig. 2 is a side view of a faucet having our improved attachment. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view ot' the same, and Fig. 4 is a llorizonal sectionalview on thelinervm in Figs. 2 and 3.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
Ain the drawings represents an ordinary faucet, which may be of any suitable wellknown construction.
B is the key or spigot, upon the lower end of which is fastened a clamp, C, by means ot' which ourimproved device is attached to the faucet. Said clamp, which may be made of ordinary sheet metal, consists ofa ring havinga vertical slot, D, adjoining which the ends are turnedinward and sharpened,as at E, thus forming points which take inthe lower end ofthe spigot, thereby securing the device in position. The ring or clamp G is provided at its front end with a shank, F, having bearings for a vertical pin or shaft, G, the upper end of which has a nut, G2, to hold itin its bearing, and the lower end of which is bent rearwardly under the spigot, as shown, and thence upwardly, as at H, forming an arm, to the upper end of which is attached a U-shaped bail, I, itting around the lower half of the body of the faucet.
Secured to the shaft G, near its lower end, is
a disk, J, made of sheet metal, and provided with upturncd points K K.
L is an elastic washer made of leather, rubber, or any other suitable material, which is placed upon the said disk Jand held securely by the points K K, which enter the sides of said washer, as clearly shown inthe drawings.
The operation ot'ouriuvention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. lVhen the spigotis turned for the purpose of permitting the liquid to escape, the bail I, guided by the body of the faucet, is moved in a rearward direction to the position shown in dottedlines in Fig. 2, thus causing the disk J to swing from under the spigot, thus ref` moving the obstruction to the ready dow ofthe liquid. When the spigot is reversed the bail I moves forwardly, thus causing the disk J to swing underthespigot, thus cuttingot't'thetlow ofliquid and closing the opening of the spigot tightly, thus preventing the escape and waste of drippings, and preventing insects., dust, or any foreign matter from entering the spigot. The construction of our improved device is simple, and it may be readily attached to any ordinary faucet.
We claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. The combination, with a faucet, ot' a disk or plate arranged to close the opening of the spigot and means for automatically turning it from under the spigot when the latter is turned, as set forth;
2. The combination, with afaucet, ofa clamp, secured detachably upon the spigot, .and having a vertical shaft carrying a disk which extends under the opening of the spigot, and means for swinging said disk automatically from under thespigot when the latter is turned, as set forth.
3. The combination, withafaucet, ot'a iingor clamp secured detachably upon the same, a shalt journaled vertically' in said clamp and havingan inward and upward extendingarm, carrying a U-shaped bail and a disk or plate secured to the said vertical shaft, and having an elastic washer, as set forth.
4.. The combination, with a spigot, of a de tachable ring or clamp, having a vertical slot with inturned points or edges, said clamp can rying an automatic cut-olf, as set forth.

5. In a ent-off forfaucets, the herein-deelastic washer secured in place by the npscribed disk or plate, having uptnrned/ points turned points of said plate ordisk,as set forth. entering the edges of and securing in posi- In testimony that we claim the foregoing as tion an elastic plate 0r Washer, as set forth. v our own We have hereto affixed our signatures I5 5 6.
