W.v RIGKARDS. NEGKTIE HOLDER;
*iff* WML v N. Pneus. mu-mm wam-.em u. c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM RICKARDS, OF FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HARRY t B. RICKARDS, OF SAME PLACE.
NECKTIE-HOLDER.
i SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,827, dated March 27, 18,83.
Application filed December 27, 1882. (No model.) I
To all 'whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, WILLIAM RIcKAaDs, of
Franklin, in the countyof Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Holders for Standing Collars; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to ro make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in necktie-holders for standing collars, and it consists in a suitable frame which has a turned,
out loop at each of' its ends for the uecktie to` pass through, and a'suitable bend, slot, or recess at its center to catch under the collar-button, as will be more fully described hereinafter. zo The object of my invention is to provide a means for preventing the necktie or ribbon used in connection with astanding collar from rising upward over the top of the collar, as the tie or ribbon will invariably do it' some appliance is not used to prevent it.
Figure l is a perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, showing it in position.
A represents a suitable t'rame, which may be 3o made either from a single continuous piece `of wire or from a plate which is stamped into shape, and `which has the loops B formed at each end. These loops are turned out so as to be in a direct linewith the necktie or ribbon as it passes aroundthe collar, and which loops serve to keep the necktie from rising upward over the collar. The center ot' the frame is provided with a downward bend, recess, or slot, C, so that the frame will catch under the 4o collar-button and be prevented t'rorn rising upward. This bend, recess, -or slot may be made t to fit tightly around the shank of the button, or it may be made to slip loosely over it, for the necktie or ribbon will prevent the frame from dropping downward under any circumstances. The ends of the necktie or ribbon having been passed through the loops, the loop is forced upward under the `collar-button, and then` the necktie is tied in the usual manner. When the tie is made this frame is entirely 5o hidden from sight.
I am aware that frames have been-made for use in connection with butterflies or ties Which are secured to suitable` backs; but in no case has a frame been made which is adapted to be used in connection with a standing collar, which has turned-down loops so as to be in a line with the tie or ribbon as it passes around,`
lthe collar, and which is made to catch under the collar-button, as is here shown. 6o
I am aware that a notched plate having prongs upon its ends is not new. In this case,
however, the notch is made in the lower edge of the plate, and the prongs are given a double bend, so as to tirstcatch under the collar, which ycan only be put on after the plate is secured upon the button. My invention differs from this in having a notch in the top of the plate,
so as to catch under the collar-button after the collar has been put on, and in having simple 7o loops upon its ends for the ends of the tie to pass through.
My device can be used independently of the collar, and can be removed without having to unbutton both ends ot' the collar. 75
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A necktie-holding device consisting of the frame A, having the central open recess or loop, C, in its top edge, and end loops B, all 8o substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my s'rgnaturein presence ot' two witnesses.
WILLIAM RICKARDS.
` lVitnesses J oHN K. BRYDEN, H. B. RIcKARDs.
