PATENT WILLIAM L. EARTH, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
NECKTlE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,541, dated March 20, 1900.
' Application filed May 23, 1899. Serial No. 717,969. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatLWILLIAM L. BARTH,a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in holders or retainers for neckties.
As heretofore constructed necktie-holders have either been provided with a loop which entirely engaged the band of the necktie, rapidly wearing into the same and making it difficult to manipulate, or else they have been provided with some sort of pin or hook or sharp-pointed projection which engaged in the fabric, making adjustment in arranging the tie'practically impossible. Other devices have been provided in connection with the collar-buttons which have been far from satisfactory.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of necktie holder or retainer which can be applied directly to the collar and will hold the tie in an inconspicuous manner and in such a way that it can be easily shifted back and forth in arranging it without undue wearing upon the band and without any danger from the fabric being engaged by any pointed projection.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in this specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claim.
The structure is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a portion of a collar and necktie with my improved necktie-retainer in place. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on a line corresponding to line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the necktie-holder detached from the collar. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a modification of the structure, in which it is constructed of sheet metal in place of a wire, as appears in Fig. 3.
In the drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, A represents a section of a collar.
B is the band of a necktie.
My improved necktie holder consists of wire arranged into a vertical inner portion 0 O, united together at the top by a cross portion 0', adapted to insert within the collar, and a portion D D, adapted to extend up outside of the collar, which is joined at the top by a downwardly-deflected curved loop D, which engages over the tie and allows it to move freely back and forth. The loop being curved will not engage the tie, but allow it to be moved freely, but extending over the top of the tie prevents it being raised up on' the collar, which is all that is required of a tieholder'of this class.
The modified form is of sheet metal, the thin plateC extending upback of the collar, the loop D to the outside of the collar, and the upper portion D is bent downwardly and curved to allow the necktie-band to pass freely back and forth without undue wear or obstruction. The preferred form is that made of the wire, as all of the parts when formed of wire are perfectly round and smooth and not liable to cause undue wear either on the collar or necktie-band, and it is further, when properly constructed, not so conspicuous as the structure made of sheet metal, though both forms are superior on this account.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A necktie-holder consisting of a wire bent with portions 0 to extend within the collar, connected together by the portions C above, and portions D extending up outside the collar to clasp the same in conjunction with portions O,and joined together at their upper ends by the downwardly and outwardly curved portion D which serves to engage the band of a necktie, coacting for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM L. EARTH. [n s.]
