LAMP 0R TORCH.
Patented Mar.2'7, 1883.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN-B. DEEDS, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF VVILLTAM MACK, OF SAME PLACE.
LAMP OR TORCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,731, dated March 27, 1883.
v Application filed January 17, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN B. DEEDS, of Terre Hante, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps or Torches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
to reference being bad to theaccom panyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention consists in improvements in that class of inventions known as miners 1 lamps, generally used by miners, engineers,
and mechanics; and it has forits object to provide the neck or spout of the lamp with an improved device for raising or adjusting the height of the wick therein, the said device adapted by its construction also to serve as a means of ventilation to the lamp or torch.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the lamp or torch. Fig. 2 is a front view with the neck or spout in section,
showing the arrangement thereofand the manner of fixing therein the raising device. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the wick-raiser, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view thereof, both of which show the air or vent passage.
0 Referring more particularly to the drawings, A designates the lamp.
B is the spout or neck, and O the wick.
,A is an inner neck or spout arranged withinthe outer one, B, and is joined or soldered 5 thereto at the inner end, where it is fitted to the lamp.
bis the lid, hinged to the lamp in the ordinary way. i
D is the wick-raiser, which works in an elon- 4o gated slot, 0, in the spout. Thiswick-raiseris formed of a metallic piece made hollow for a portion of its length, and its solid end bent around and-brought down the side of the hollow portion, as shown, and. then bent at right 5 angles, so as to form a handle, a, whereby it can be manipulated. The outersurface of the hollow portion is made with lateral points 0, which are bent slightly out and upward, so as l to engage the wick, thus enabling it to be raised when the handle is pushed upward. 5d The solid part of its length works between the neck B and the inner neck, A, while itshollow portion, extending over the top of the throat A, works inside and adjacent to the wick.
The object of having a portion of the wickraiser hollow is for thepurpose of providing means of ventilation for the lamp, which heretot'ore has been done by having an openingin the lid or top, which causes a leakage of itsj contents and other disadvantages. The way it performs this function is by having a hole, 0, in the end, which extends a short way into the lamp, and another hole, 0, in the top, where it is bent around, which communicates with the external air. Any foul vapor that may arise therein will be permittedtoescape.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When it is desired to raise the wick, by taking hold of the small handle a and pushing it" upward the projecting teeth on the hollow'portion penetrate slightly into the wick and raise it, and by sliding the handle down it doesnot draw the wick back again, owing to the projections extending upward. Thus in this way the hollow end can always be made to extend a small distance into the lamp, and from itsconstruction facilitate the ventilation of. the lamp, as described.
The wick-raising device can'be done up ll packages for transportation separate from the lamp, as an article of trade and commerce.
I am aware that it is not new to provide the spout of a miners lamp ora torch .with means for raising the wick, and such do not broadly claim; but it is thought that a wick-raiser as herein shown, whereby the additional function of Ventilation for the lamp is performed, is new and What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- Lb a miners lamp, a wick-raiser having vent-tubes, as described, which serves the purpose of raising the wick andas a vent for the lamp, substantially as described.
2. A lamp or torch provided with a wick- 5 raiser made hollow for a portion of its length,
and provided with openings at the top and In testimony that I claim the foregoing as bottom thereof, as described, the outer surface my own Iafiix my signature in presence of two 10 of said. hollow portion having lateral teeth for witnesses.
engaging with the wick, substantially as de- JOHN B. DEEDS. 5 scribed. v
3. A wick-raiser for lamps and torches, pro- Witnesses: vided with a vent-tube for giving vent to the FRED A. Boss,
lamp, as an article of manufacture. W. B. LAMPILON.
