Description
J. SHRIVER.
COAL OIL CHANDELIER.
No. 175,770. Patented April 4;, 1876.
NPETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED, 'ra'rns JAMES SHRIVER, OF BALTIMORE, MD., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FIFTH OF HIS RIGHT TO EDMUND V. HERMAGE AND JAMES R. BREWER,"OF SAME PLAOE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CQAL-OlL CHANDELIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,770, dated April 4, 1876; application filed I March 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known, that I, JAMES SHRIVER, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Goal-Oil Uhandeliers, and I do hereby declare that the iollowing is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a pcrspe. tive view. Fig. 2 shows the tubeB detached, and Fig. 3 is a crosssection after the line 00 m in Fig. l. g
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to chandeliers for burning coal-oil and it consists in providing the SUSPBIlSlOIl-IOtl, sliding Within a slotted and notched tube by means of which it may be adjusted at any desired height, with a projecting catch or bracket at its upper end, which answers the double purpose of retaining the chandelier at any desired height by catching into the notches in the suspensiontube, and of forming fastenings or supports for arms carrying smoke-caps, substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A is a coal-oil chandelier, which is constructed in the usual manner, having oil-receptacle 0, arms D, burners E, and suspension-rod F. This latter has a projecting pin or bracket, G, which slides in the slot 1) in the tube B, in which the suspension-rod itself slides.
From one or both sides of slot 12 in tube B extend a series of downwardly-slanting slots, 0, in which the pin G may be made to rest, thus preventing the chandelier from dropping down. The retaining pin or bracket G is provided with two yertical perforations, g, opposite to each other, and so arranged that each perforation y will be just opposite to and on a line with the burners E E. Into the perforations 9 may be inserted, whenever desirable, bent iron rods or stout wires, projecting at-right angles from the tube B, parallel to the arms D l), to the ends of which smoke-caps are affixed, so as to be just over the burners. It will be observed that, by this arrangement, the smoke-caps will be raised or lowered with the chandelier, so as to be always an even distance from the burners. Tube B is aflixed under the ceiling in any suitable manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the chandelier A, having arms D and burners E, with the slotted and notched adjusting-tube B and sliding suspension-rod F, the latter having pin or bracket Gr, provided with perforations 9 arranged opposite to the burners E, substantially as and for the purpose herein shownand specified.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES SHRIVER.
