To all whom it may concern i Beit known that I, THOMAS J. PAIRPOINT, of New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lBrushes for Boot or Shoe Polishing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, Aand exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art tO which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in boot or shoe cleaning machines; and it con sists in the combination of a brush made in the form of an endless belt or apron, with an adjustable pivoted arm, whereby the slaclrof the brush may be taken up at any time and one end of the brush adjusted vertically so as to accommodate the brush to the height of the operator. t
The object of my invention is to provide a brush which will have a much larger surface, and in which the tips of the bristles only are in constant Contact with the boot or shoe, so as to secure a brilliant and enamel-like polish.

Upon one end of this shaft is secured the round brush D, which is to be used for cleaning the mud and dirt from the boot, shoe, or other article being polished, and upon the same end of the shaft is also secured a suitable brush, l?, for applying the blacking. To the opposite end of the shaft is se' cured the driving-pulley G, around which the endless brush E is made to pass. The second pulley, I, is journaled in the ends of the pivoted supporting-arm J, which is secured to one side of the frame or standard A by means of the clampingbolt which passes through the slot L in the lower end of the.
arm. This lever is made adjustable, so that one end of the brush can be raised or lowered, so as to suit the height of the Operator. Where the operator is tall the end of the brush may be raised upward, so that he will not have to' stoop over too much, and where he is short the end can belowered accordingly. By means of this adjustability the brush can be tightened to any desired degree, and can be adjusted at its outer end so` as to run at any desired angle.
By making the polishing-brush in the shape Ot' au endless belt or apron not only is a much larger bearing-surface presented; but the tips Of the bristles are brought more into play than they-can be in a round brush, and thus a much better polish can be given. In constructing this long brush I do not limit myself to any particular construction; but as a general thing the bristles will be passed through a strip Ot leather, rubber, or other suitable substance and securely fastened in position in any snitable manner. Over the inner side of this strip to which the 'bristles are secured will be placed a second strip of leather or rubber Or other suitable material, o, which will serve as a protection for the inner ends oi' 1 the bristles, and thus prevent them from be- Y coming cut Or broken bythe pulleys. This inner protecting-piece also forms a better belt than would be formed by the piece through which thebristles are passed.

claim- In al boot or shoe polishing machine, the combination of a brush made in the form Ot' an endless band or apron, the two pulleys on which the brush revolves, and the slotted supportingarm upon which one of the pulleys is journaled, the arm being attached to the sup porting-standard and adjustable both horizontally and vertically, substantially as show n.
