No. 274.1918.' `Patented Mar.20,1883.

HENRY E. HUroHINs, on EENNVILLE, MICHIGAN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,198, datedMarch 20, 1883.
' Application tiled November 27, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may` concern of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
7 clear, and exact description of the invention,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompan yin gdrawings, which form a part of this specilcation.
rlhis invention relates to wire-stretchers, such as shown in my Patent No. 253,058, J anuary31,188.l;` anditpconsists in certain improvements in the `construction and operation of the same. t
In the drawings, Figure is a perspective view of the device complete; Fig. 2, a like view, showingmy improvement; Fig. 3. a crosssection on the line :v fr, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a side view ofthe improvements.
The device is constructed substantially as shown in the above patent, with the hooked .plate or bar A, hooked pawl-lever B, guidebox C, and eccentric clamp D. To the hooked end ofbar A is pivoted, as at E, aconnectinglink, F, on which ispivoted, by a pin or bolt, G, the shank H ot' a plate, I, having a shoulder, J, and extension K.
L designates a single lever having a hookedshaped end, M, forming a curved edge, N. Thelever is pivoted at this end to the exten` sion of plate I by a pin or bolt, O, and the4 shoulder J and curve-d edge N may be serrated to gain securer hold on the wire;
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The lever is first thrown back to the position shown in Fig. 2,10 allow the Wire to be placed between the shoulder J and end M, when the `handle is drawn in a direction from the eccentric clamp, thus clamping the wire between the end and v shoulder. Then, by moving the lever round the'post, as indicated by the arrow, Fig. l, the wire is tightly. clamped against the shoulder by the lever and is stretched by the movement of the lever round the post, which causes the link F to turn on its pivot and carry the clamping-plate I. -As it is stretched the wire is drawn through the guide C under clamp D, which will automatically hold it while the lever movement is repeated.
It will be observed that, with this improved mechanism, I accomplish the stretchingot' the wire with but a single lever, instead of the two heretofore used, and thus gain greater convenience,eiiiciency, and rapidity. At the same t time the expense is lessened, and the device sim plitied and rendered more durable.
As herein shown, the clamp D is pivoted to but one side ofthe box U on a pin, S, extending therefrom, and comprises a lever or handle, P, from the butt-end ot' which extends a. thin shank, Q, carrying at its bottom a serrated flat plate, R, the whole forming a very efficient and light eccentric `clamp for holding the wire.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improvement in wire-stretchers, lthe combination of the hooked plate A, carrying the. eccentric clamp D, connecting-link F, pivoted to plateAand having an upturned outer end, the short clamping-plate I, having its enlarged shank H pivoted to the upturned end ot' link F and provided with a straight; shoulder, and the pivoted single lever In, having its curved end continued into aw rounded tongue, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hav'e hereto aiiixed my signature in' presence of two witnesses. e
HENRY H. HUTOHINS.
