APPLIOATIOK FILED NOV. 16.1905.
ATTORNEY s-rtns co.. wAsmMaruN, n. c. v
JOHN L. ALBIN, OF COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO.
FENCE-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. June 4, 1907.
Application filed November 15,1906. Serial No. 343,558.
To (all whom it may concern;
The method of operation is as follows.
Be it known that I, JOHN L. ALBIN, a citi- For use as a wire stretcher the fulcrinn arm zen of the United States, residing at Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fence-Tools, of'which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a new and novel combination tool to be used in fence buildmg and repairing either as a wire stretcher, wire cutter or a staple puller. These results are obtained by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan of my device in position for use as a wire stretcher. elevation of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 illustrates the wire cutting device as seen in an elevation and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 shows a side view of the staple pulling end of the tool. Fig. 6 is an end view of arrangement shown in Fig. 5.
Throughout the several views like characters refer to like arts.
Referring to tie details of construction 1 is a handle or lever.
2 is a curved continuation of the handle 1 and in operation it is this curved arm which forms a fulcrum against the fence post as a pivot.
3 is a staple puller on the opposite end of the handle 1. It consists of a heel and pair of claws having between them a wedge shaped slot similar in arrangement to the ordinary claw hammer.
4 is a claw plate welded, riveted or otherwise fastened to the handle 1 at the point where the curvature begins. This claw plate has a wedge shaped slot 6 intended to receive the wire to be tightened. One end of the curved arm 2 is flattened and finished to receive and furnish a bearing for a like flattened and finished end on the lever 5 which is to be secured at such bearing by means of the pivot 9. I
8 represents the wire to be stretched.
7 is a fence post to which the wire is to be fastened when stretched.
10 and 11 are vertical wire cutting slots in the pivoted ends of the lever 5 and arm 2.
' 13 is a staple to be pulled. p
14 is a hook on the end of the lever 5.
Fig. 2 is a front I is placed on the opposite side of the fence post from which the wireis to be secured. The wire is then placed in the slot 6 and with the lever the stretcher is moved around the post l in the direction in which the wire is to be pulled. When the desired tension has been secured the Wire is stapled to the post. Should the user desire tohol'd the wire taut without stapling to the post, the hook 14 on the end of the lever 5 would be driven into the post after which the handle might be released, the hook or barb 14 preventing it from moving backward aroinid post and loosening wire. As a wire cutter, the wire is placed in the slots 10 and 11 while such slots are in line. The lever 5 is then moved. in and the wire sheared between the inner edges of the slots. As a staple puller, the end designated as 3 is to be used. The claws on this end are either inserted between the wire and the post if the staple is holding a Wire to the post or through the end of the staple if open, then with the heel as a pivot the handle is moved until the staple is withdrawn.
The tool may be made of steel, iron wood or any other suitable materials or combination of materials.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a fence tool the combination of a lever composed of the handle 1, the curved fulcrum arm 2 and having secured to it the claw block 4 adapted to engage and hold the wire to be stretched, a lever pivoted to the end of the fulcrum arm 2 and having on its end the hook 14 to be driven into the post for the purpose of holding the wire taut until permanently as described and for set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto the uses and purposes signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN L. ALBIN. Witnesses:
