I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B.IGETTY AND. DAVID BRIOKER, or HIcKsvILLE, OHIO.
STOVE-.PIPE DRUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,117, dated March ;]1883. Application filed January 25,1883. (No model.)
10 and it consists essentially in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which 7 will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is I 5 a vertical sectional view of a stove-pipe drum equipped with our improvements. Fig.2 is a horizontal or transverse sectional view of the same on the line as as in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the damper removed from the drum.
The same lettersrefer to the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates a stove-pipe drum, which consists of a body, B, havinga detachable cap or upper section, 0. The upper end of the bodyB is provided with vertical slots D, forming bearings for a, transverse shaft, E, having collars F, by which it is retained in its bearings, and provided at one end with a crank, G, by means of which it may be conveniently turned. The cap 0, when in position, retains the shaft securely.
H is a disk or damper secured to the shaft E inside the drum or casing. The sides of the said disk or damper areprovided with slots I, at the sides of which are secured lugs J, between which downwardly-depending rods K I are pivoted. Between the said rods, at suit- 40 able distances apart, are pivoted similar disks or dampers, L L,of which there may be any number desired. The sides of thedampers H and L are cut away alternately on opposite sides, as shown at M, so that even when the dampers are in a horizontal position they will v admit of the passage of the products of combastion from the stove, to which the device is applied by the latter taking a zigzag course between the dampers. By turning the shaft 5 -E all of the disks or dampers may be turned simultaneously to a verticalor to a horizontal position, as required, within the drum or pipe. The uppermost disk or damper, H, is provided with a slide, N, having pins 0 0, working in guide-slots P in the said disk, and having an operating-rod, Q, extending through a perforation in the collar at the outer end of the shaft E, and provided with a knob or handle,
R. The said slide may be moved out, so as to cover the opening M at the edge of the disk or damper, and thusobstruct the passage of the products of combustion when it shall be desired to do so.
The operation and advantages of oiilr invention will be readily understood from the fore- 6 5 going description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. By manipulating the crank-shaft the dampers may be readily adjusted so as to permit the products of combustion to pass freely, or so as to check their passage by compelling them to takea zigzag course. By operating the slide N their passage may be entirely prevented.
This invention is applicable to ordinary stove-pipes by fitting the shaft E at the joint 7 5 between two sections of pipe.
We claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of a stove-pipe or drum, a shaft journaled transversely in the same and provided with collars to hold it in position, a series of dampers having alternately cut-away sides and connected by pivoted rods, one of the said dampers being secured to the said I shaft, and a slide mounted upon the damper 8 5 thus secured and having an operating-rod extending through a perforation in the collar at the outer end of the transverse shaft, whereby the said slide may be manipulated so as to cover the cut-away side of the said damper, as set forth. I
. In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM B. GETTY. DAVID BRIOKER.
