Description
R. D. SANDILAND. Stove-Back Lining.
Patented Mar. 18,1879..
N. PETERS, Priora-LITHOGRAFH, wAsmNsroN D C UNITED STATES PATENT GFFIGE ROBERT D. SANDILAND, OF LYONS, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-BACK LININGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,352, dated March 1B, 1879; application filed January 24, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT DIcKsoN SAN- DILAND, of Lyons city, Clinton county, State of Iowa, have invented au Improved Stove- Back Lining, of which the following is a specication:
The object of my invention is to so construct a stove-back lining that the contraction and expansion of t-he back under the heat and cold it is subject to may be compensated for without injury to the stove. This I accomplish in the following manner, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon.
Same letter refers to same part in different iignres.
A represents the center piece, which is cast about sixteen inches in length 5 B B, end pieces, cast about six inches in length. C C are lugs cast on center piece, A. D D are inclined slots cast in the end pieces, B B.
,I Figure 1 is a back view. Fig. 2 is a section on line w w, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view.
Operation: Having pnt the back together by passing the lugs O C into the slots D D, as shown, and placing it in the stove, the heat ot' the lire will expand the center piece, A,
which will cause it to rise, as indicated by the dotted lines. The end pieces, B B, being fitted against the sides of the stove, they cannot move, and as the center piece, A, expands, the lugs O O slide up in the slots, raising it up from the bottom, and as it contracts from cold its weight or gravity settles it back to its original place without derangement of any of its parts.
I cast a hook on the lugs C O, passing` it through the opening at the upper end of slots D D. This hook keeps the parts together.
I cast the slots D D inclining in opposite directions, for the obvious reason that both ends of A may move alike.
Bolts may be used instead of lugs; but I prefer the lugs.
I cast three of these slots in each end piece, the more readily to fit different sizes of stoves.
I am aware ofthe patent to Charles W. Warner, of La Fayette, Indiana, and disclaim any of his patentable features.
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an adjustable stove-back lining, the in clined slots l) D, for the purpose above set forth and specified.
ROBERT DICKSON SANDILAND.
