To all whom it may concermj Be it known that I, JOHN GEARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadel. phia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new `and useful Improvements in Safety-Pockets; and 4I do declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,

, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,

reference being had tothe accompanying drawi ings, and to the letters and tignres of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. l

Myinvention is designed to furnish a safetypocket,to be attached to the ordinary pocket of a vest or other garment, in which the watch,

money, or valuables may be safely carried without danger of loss of the contents from pickpockets or accident. p

It consists of the devices hereinafter more fully described. p f

I make use of two thin metal plates of a size adapted to the pocket and ot' the shape shownin the drawings, Figs. 2 and 3. To the stationary plate a are aixed three or more Shanks, c c c, with screw-heads. When corresponding holes are made in the cloth of' the vest-pocket and these shanks inserted through to fastenthe i them the button-nuts d may be screwed on and tightened by means of the wrench, Fig. 8, effectively securing the plate to the garment. To the shifting or turning plate b the pouch f, which may be Ot' chamois-skin, soft leather, or cloth, is attached by means of the rivets e e e, or in any other suitable manner or it may be sewed upon the bar p, used to strengthen the upper edge of the turning plate. This 5o plate b has a circular slot, g, terminating in the notch h. VIt is also provided with a thumbpiece, l. The two plates a and b are attached together by and turn upon the pivot It. This pivot also holds the end of the springm. This spring is provided with a finger-piece, t', and catch n. When the plates are turned One upon the other the catch n passes along the slot g until it reaches the notch h, into which it is forced by the spring m, and the two plates are 6o securely locked in that position.' The turning plate and the mouth of the pouch are now at right angles to the mouth of the pocket ot' the vest and the stationary plate. The contents of the pouch cannot be reached while in this position by any other lingers than those of the wearer. The owner, however, easily unlocks the pocket by pressing his thumb on the thumb-piece linside of the vest-pocket, and at the Sametime applyingihis middle finger to 7o the finger-piece t of the spring, whereby the catch is disengaged from the notch and the month of the safety-pocket can be turned up- V ward for use. Iclaim as of my invention, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent- 1. The two plates u. and b, united by and turning upon the pivot 7s, provided with the spring m and catch n, and the slot g and notch It, substantially as shown and described, and 8o for the purposes set forth.

2. The stationary plate a, provided with screw-Shanks c and button-nuts d, in combination with the turning plate b and pouch,` substantially as shown and described, and for 8 5 the purposes set forth.

3. The spring m, provided with catch n and linger-piece z', in combination with the sta! tionary plate a. and turning plate b, the latter having the slot g and notch h and thumb-piece 9o l, as specified and shown, and for the purposes set forth.
