GREY UTLEY, OF CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA.
HEAD-REST FOR TRAVELERS IN RAILROAD-CARS, CARRIAGES, Sco.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,395, dated March 6, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GREY UTLEY, of Chapel Hill, in the county of Orange and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Head-Rests for Railroad-Gars and other Purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification.
This article is designed to rest upon the shoulders of the wearer and support the head while the arms are held by the lower portion in such a manner as to serve as a brace to the head piece. Its construction will be understood from the drawing, in which- H is the head piece with branches B B, terminating in hooks C C. From the rear portion of these branches the bow D passes from side to side forming a yoke to rest upon the shoulders of the wearer. The head is received by the head piece H, and the arms resting in hooks C serve as a counter pressure to resist the backward tendency of the head.
The article may be made of light metal suitably padded and covered.

Other modifications may be made to suit circumstances provided the general principle of construction be not deviated from.
Having described my invention and the operation thereof I claim- 'A rest H supported by the shoulders of the wearer and having terminations for supporting the wearers arms so that the weight thereof shall counteract the pressure of the head against said rest substantially as set forth.
