Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. LOCKWOOD, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
HEAD-REST.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 27,058, dated February 7, 1860.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. LooKwooD, of the city of New York, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Head Rest or Supporter for the Head; and I do hereby declare that the followinfr is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a support for the head by means of a strap passing around the body and connected with strips of metal, or other material, resting upon the chest or shoulders which strips, at their upper extremities are connected with a similar strip passing behind the head, which last named strip is covered with a cushion or pad.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a perspective view, showing the mode of applying` my said invent-ion; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the supporter; Fig. 3 is a section of a portion of it.
I take five pieces or strips of steel, each of about 9 inches in length, and of suitable width and thickness, marked in Fig. 2 as A, B, B, and C, C. Piece A I attach to the pieces B, B, by means of a rivet at each end of it; and the pieces B, B, and C, C, I connect by a sliding joint; the strap,'D, passing around the body and through holes made in the lower ends of the pieces C, C. Attached to the strip A, is a cushion or pad for the head to rest upon, which pad may be fastened permanently or so arranged as to slide on and off the strip. The pieces B, B, and C, C, I cover with leather or other suitable material, and, if desired, padding may be introduced between the covering and the strip.
It will be seen, that when the pieces are all connected as above described, the pieces B and C, on each side of the chest, will answer the same purpose as a single stri of steel on each side would do, running rom the strap around the waist to the support rback of the head; and that they will, on each side of the head, by means of the rivets in piece A, form such an angle as the convenience of the wearer may require. It will also be seen that when the strap D, is securely fastened around the waist, and made to connect with C, C, as above described, the chest or shoulders present the fulcrums upon which the weight of the head will rest.
The mode of construction above described will enable the apparatus to be so folded up that it may conveniently be carried-its entire length being of course no greater than that of one of the pieces.
I do not confine myself to the material named for the construction of the pieces or strips, their number, or the manner of connecting them with each other, or to the mode of securing the lower ends of the strips C, C, in their places.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A supporter for the head by the combination and arrangement of the parts A, B, B,
C, C, and strap D, substantially as above described.
