Description
J. McMURTRY.
Car Seat and Couch.
- No. 21.052. Patented July 27, 1858.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MCMURTRY, OF LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO JAS. B. GLOW AND JOHN BEST, OF FAYETTE COUNTY, KENTUCKY.
RAILROAD-CAR SEAT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J NO. l loMUR'rRY, of Lexington, Fayette county, in the State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable and Reversible Seat for Railroad-Cars, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in making the seats in cars, &c., adjustable for night travel, so as to form a most comfortable berth for the rest and repose of railroad travelers at night and at the same time can be readily adjusted for traveling bv day in the ordinary form. These seats are reversible and in every way compact and convenient as the present form of seat for day travel.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construct-ion and operation.
I constructmy improved seat for cars, &c., in the ordinary form, as at Figure 1, with the following improvement for the purposes above named as exhibited in Fig. 2.
The same letters refer to like parts in Figs. 1 and 2.
a, is the ordinary frame for car seats, &c.
B, is the ordinary seat in same, improved by having the same to turn on an axle in the center of each end of same, as C, with a quadrant, d, attached as shown with the thumb screw 6, for fastening same so as to be able to secure the seat B at any angle desired.
f, is an adjustable seat that folds on the top of B, as shown at Fig. 1, being secured to the seat B, by means of handsome and strong leather straps s, or their equivalent as shown at Fig. 3. This manner of securing 7 to B, as shown is as will readily be perceived a convenient and durable mode of hingin the same together, by which means f will fold either Way desired, and by means of the slotted metal strips H, on the ends of f, secured by means of I, I, on which they will slip either way at pleasure, so that when 7 is unfolded from B as in Fig. 2, the slotted metal strip on each end of f is slipped forward and rests on the cross bar J and at the same time receives the edges of the foot board Z", and holds the same firmly until released, as shown at Fig. 2. It will be perceived that the footboard 7c, is hinged in its center m, and is reversible at pleasure.
at, n, is the back of the seat, being made and hung in the ordinary way excepting the arms 0, 0, are elongated and slotted so that the back a, a, may be pushed back as far as may be desirable and by means of the back a, a, being attached to the arms 0, 0, so as to turn at pleasure can be secured in any angle to the seat, as may be desired by means of the quadrants P, P, with its thumb screws R, R, as shown at Fig. 2.
This seat is easily and readily adjusted for the purpose of affording a comfortable berth to passengers for traveling in the night and are easily and readily reversed or can readily be adjusted for day travel as shown at Fig. 1.
By my improvement as above described the same car may be used both day and night without the inconvenience of having to use separate cars for day and night travel.
I do not claim the quadants a1, (Z, and I, P, wit-h their thumb screws separately; neither do I claim the mode of hinging the seats B and f together, as these devices are not new, but
Vhat I claim as my invention an desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows I claim the combination and arrangement of the seat, back, footboard and quadrants for the purpose of making the seat adjustable and reversible at pleasure substantially as described for the purposes set forth.
J NO. MGMURTRY.
