Description
P. B. GREEN Car Seat and Couch.
Patented Dec. 21. 1858 Wifiessea ILPETERs, PQJTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FEICE.
PLYMON B. GREEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEATS AND SLEEPING-COUCHES FOR RAILROAD-CARS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PLYMON B. GREEN, of Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Seats; and I do hereby deelare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists, first, in the arrangement, under a car-seat having a hinged back and stationary section of cushion, of a sliding drawer, E, which has one portion of its top closed or cushioned and the other portion open, in combination with a stationary cushion and back of an opposite seat, in the manner hereinafter specified.
It consists, second, in combination with the above, in the arrangementof the upper couches on hinges in the peculiar manner hereinafter specified.
By the first feature of my invention only one of the backs and one of the cushions of every pair of seats require to be adjusted in order to form a lower sleeping couch, and besides this, when the adjustment of the cushion is made the bed-covering is exposed to view and brought to a convenient position to be got at and handled by the traveler. A receptacle is also provided for the reception of valuables, which cannot be removed while the traveler is sleeping upon the lower couch.
By the second feature of my invention great convenience and facility are afforded for adjusting the upper couch either out of the way or to a position for sleeping use.
Figure 1 is a perspective view representing the seats. Fig. 2 is a perspective view represent the sleeping-couches. Fig. 3 is a sectional view representing drawer E and slide-seat B. Fig. 4 is a sectional view representing the raising and letting down of the upper couch, F. Fig. 5 represents a double-jointed hinge for managing upper couch D D, stationary seats; 0 O, stationary backs to seats D D B, slideseat; A, pivoted back; M M, frame-work of ends of the seats; L L, partition between the seats; 1, side of car; J, roof of car; F, upper couch; GG,double-jointed hinges; PP,posts; H, frame-work on side of car for seats to rest on; E, drawer, and N cushion between the backs.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
1 construct my seats and backs by upholstering in the usual way. Seats D D and backs O G are attached permanently to the side of the car and to the frame-work M M, whichis fastened to the floor. Seat B is attached to drawer E, and grooves 70 have corresponding tongues on frame-work H and M for drawer E to slideon. BackAis cushioned on both sides and pivoted to side of car and frame-work M at c c. By drawing out drawer E and turning down back A, I have formed the lower couch, as represented in Fig. 2. Couch F is upholstered the same as seats, and is supported on the back side by the double-jointed hinges G G. The front is supported by a bolt or button, as represented in Fig. 1. 'hen let down for use it is supported by hinges G G and shoulders a a on posts PP,as represented in Fig. 2.
Hinges G G are constructed of a straight bar pivoted to partition L Latd d, and to couch F at I) b, which will allow couchF to swing up or down, as represented by the dotted circw lar lines in Fig. 4.. Fig. 5 represents a doublejointed hinge differently constructed for the same purpose; h h, joints, the upper part, I, to be attached to the side of car, instead of partition L L,the lower part, a, to be attached to back side of couch F, instead of end of couch.
Drawer E is a repository where passengers can put their clothing or anything of value, also for keeping blankets and pillows when not in use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement, under the seat, of a sliding drawer, E, which has one portion of its top cushioned and the other portion open, in combination with the hinged back or cushion A and stationary cushions D N, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the above, the arrangement of the upper couches on hinges in the peculiar manner specified, so that they can be adjusted with facility, substantially as described, and illustrated in the drawings.
PLYMON B. GREEN.
