United States Patent COMBINATION ADJUSTABLE CHAIR AND HAIR DRYING ATTACHMENT June Fox, Portland, Oreg.
Application September 24, 1951, Serial No. 248,054
1 Claim. (Cl. 34-90) This invention relates to improvements in beauty parlor equipment and more particularly to a chair having a backrest adjustable into various reclining positions and combined with hair-drying apparatus adjustably attached to the chair and applicable to the head of the occupant of the chair throughout all the adjusted positions of the backrest so that the occupant will not be compelled, as heretofore, to remain in an upright seated position throughout the hair-drying operation.
A further object of the invention is the provision of hair-drying apparatus connected to the back rest of a chair and which is adjustable in a vertical plane above the back rest of the chair and also laterally in an arcuate path of movement with respect to the head and hair of the occupant of the chair.
Another object is the provision of means associated with the chair and within convenient reach of an occupant for conveniently moving the backrest into desired reclining positions.
These and other objects will appear as my invention is more fully hereinafter described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and finally pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
The figure in the drawing is a side elevation of a chair and hair-drying apparatus made in accordance with my invention.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing:
The base of the chair, indicated by reference numeral 1, may be of square, round or other suitable formation and flared outwardly as at 2 to provide a stabilizing flange by means of which the chair is anchored to a floor 3 or other suitable support. The top end of the base is provided with a box frame 4 within which is disposed a seat cushion 5 and whose side walls are provided with upwardly extending plates 6 provided at their top edges with armrests 7. To the rear wall of the box frame 4 I pivotally attach, as at 8, a backrest 9 padded as at 10 and terminating at its upper end in a headrest 11. The backrest is lockable in any adjusted position by means of a locking lever 9A. Formed integral with or secured to the top end of the backrest is a bracket 12 secured as at 13 to an internally threaded fitting 14 removably secured to one externally threaded end of a shaft 15. The shaft 15 is slidably mounted within an elongated cylinder 15A and settable in any adjusted position with respect thereto by means of a locking screw 15B. One end of the cylin der is provided with a socket 16 with which is engaged a ball 17 formed as one terminal end of a bracket 18 whose opposite end is secured to or formed integral with a hair drier generally indicated at 19. The hair drier is circular in front and rear elevation and formed with a concave front wall 20 provided with a multiplicity of air vents in the form of apertures 21 arranged in any desired spaced-apart and staggered relation to each other. This front wall is formed integral with or secured to a cupshaped rear wall 22 whose central portion is arranged in spaced relation to the front wall as shown. The center of the rear wall is formed with an opening 23 surrounded by an external housing 23A having air-intake openings 23B formed in its side walls and closed at its outer end by a wall 23C. Rotatably mounted in a bearing 23E, secured to the wall 23C, is a shaft 24 of a motor disposed within a housing 25 secured to the wall 22 as shown. One end of the shaft 24 is provided with a propeller 26 adjacent said rear wall and adapted upon operation of the motor to draw air through the openings in said housing and distribute it evenly outwardly through the apertures 21 in the wall 20 and into and through the hair of the user with such force that it will render it unnecessary to use a hood as heretofore which embraced all of the hair .on the head of the user and sometimes a portion of the users face. It will be noted that the head of the user rests against the exterior concave surface of the front wall 20 and is not surrounded by it.
The motor Within the housing 25 is connected in the usual manner by a cord 27 through a plug 28 with any convenient source of electrical energy not shown.
While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
I claim:
A hair-drier for use with a chair having a reclining back portion, said hair-drier comprising in combination a main body member of circular form in front and rear elevation and having a concave front wall having a plu rality of apertures formed therein, a cup-shaped rear Wall formed integral and concentric with said front wall, the central portion of the rear wall being arranged in spaced relation to said front wall, an opening formed in the. center of said central portion of the rear wall, a housing securedto the exterior of the said rear wall and surrounding said opening, the outer end of said housing being closed by a wall, a plurality of air-intake openings formed in the side walls of said housing, a motor disposed within a housing secured to said wall, a propeller'rotatably disposed within the hood adjacent said rear wall thereof and connected to said motor by a shaft, a downwardly and forwardly curved bracket secured to said rear wall and terminating at its forward end in a ball, a cylinder terminating in a socket fitting around said ball and thereby being adjustablyattached to said bracket, a shaft slidably and lockably mounted within said cylinder and extending outwardly from one end thereof and externally threaded at its outer end, an upwardly and rearwardly curved bracket secured to the upper end of said reclining back portion of the chair and terminating in an internally threaded fitting engaged with the threaded end of said shaft.
