United States Patent COMBINATION BILLFOLD AND CHECK 1390K Floyd Hofi, Fergus Falls, Minn.
Application August 23, 1954, Serial No. 451,399
1 Claim. (Cl. 150-415) This invention relates in general to improvements in billfolds, and more specifically to a combination billfold and check book.
Many persons find it highly desirable to carry a check book on their person in addition to their customary billfold. However, the carrying of a separate check book can easily prove to be a nuisance. Therefore, it is the primary object of this invention to provide a billfold which has incorporated therein a check book so that the two may be conveniently carried as a single unit.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved combination billfold and check book, the billfold being so constructed whereby a check book is secured to an inner surface of one side thereof and is so positioned whereby the billfold may be conveniently folded for carrying in ones pocket.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved combination billfold and check book the billfold being provided with a clip overlying an inner edge of the check book so as to prevent rufiling of the checks when the billfold is folded and unfolded.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the billfold which is the subject of this invention and shows the same provided with a check book, the billfold being in an open position;
Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken through the check book portion of the billfold of Figure 1 and shows the manner in which the check book is removably retained with respect to the billfold;
Figure 3 is an enlarged rear perspective view of the check book of Figure l and shows the tab carried thereby for securing it to the billfold, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary enlarged View in perspective partly broken away and shown in section and with parts omitted and illustrating the manner in which the clip is applied to the billfold.
Referring now to the drawings, it will be seen that there is best illustrated in Figure 1 the combination billfold and check book which is the subject of this invention. The combination billfold and check book includes a billfold which is referred to in general by the reference numeral and a check book which is referred to in general by the reference numeral 12.
The billfold 10 includes an inner flap 14 and an outer flap 16 which are formed of a single sheet of material folded upon itself and secured together along its opposite ends. The inner flap 14 and the outer flap 16 combine to form a bill compartment 18 open at one longitudinal edge of the billfold. Secured at one end of the bill compartment 18 is a change purse 20. Secured to the inner surface of the inner flap 14 at one side thereof, that side remote from the change purse 20, is a sheet 22 which forms in combination with the inner flap 14 a pocket 24 open at the same edge of the billfold 2,737,220 Fatenfed Mar. 6, 1956 as the compartment 18. The sheet 22 is secured to the inner flap 14 along the ends and bottom of the sheet 22 by suitable stitching 26. The stitching 26 also secures to the inner flap 14 a tab 28 of a multiple unit card holder 30, the card holder including a plurality of transparent frames 32.
The check book 12 includes a binder 34 which has secured therein a plurality of individual checks 36. Secured to the rear of the binder 34 is a sheet of material 38 folded upon itself along and opposite the binder 34 to provide a free portion thereof in the form of a tab 40. The tab 40 is generally semi-circular in outline and is selectively receivable within the pocket 24 to attach the check book 12 to the billfold 10.
In order that the individual checks 36 may not have the inner edges thereof bent over or otherwise deformed, there is carried by the billfold 10 a clip which is referred to in general by the reference numeral 42. The clip 42 has a first leg 44 thereof disposed within the bill compartment 18 and suitably secured to the inner surface of the inner flap 14. A second leg 46 of the clip 42 is spaced from the inner flap 14 and overlies the inner edge of the check book 12. The leg 46 of the clip 42 resiliently clamps against the inner edges of the individual checks 36 and prevents the folding and dog-earring of the same.
It is to be understood that the check book 12 is of the replaceable type and may be removed from the billfold 10 by merely pivoting it upwardly and out of engagement with both the clip 42 and the pocket 24.
It is readily apparent that the combination billfold and check book, which is the subject of this invention, may be easily folded to form a relatively compact single unit. Because of this, it is convenient to carry the combination billfold and check book and thereby a person may carry both a billfold and a check book at the same time with a minimum of efiort.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A combination billfold and check book comprising an elongated billfold foldable at its transverse center and including inner and outer flaps secured together to form a compartment open at one longitudinal edge of the billfold, a sheet of material stitched to the inner flap at one side of said transverse center and forming with said inner flap a pocket open at the same longitudinal edge of the billfold as said compartment, a check book including an edge binder, a sheet of material secured to the binder and folded upon itself along and opposite said binder to form a free tab removably disposed in said pocket, and a clip having a leg disposed in said compartment and secured to said inner flap and another leg spaced from said inner flap and overlying an edge of the check book.
