e 8 ru 3 1 1 W H 2 z United States Patent LIFTING DEVICE FOR CARD LICKER-IN' ROLLS Clifton Y. Bumgardner, Lancaster, S. C., assignor to The Springs Cotton Mills, a corporation of South Carolina Application September 21, 1954', Serial No. 457,513
Claims. (Cl. 254-6) This invention relates to lifting devices and more particularly to a device of this sort arranged for installing and removing card licker-in rolls at the feed end of a card frame.
The licker-in rolls in cards have to be removed vertically for maintenance and repair. These rolls are quite heavy and are covered with a toothed surface so that their installation and removal involves considerable difliculty. Also, cards are commonly installed in rather closely spaced relation and are fitted with numerous open belts and pulleys which present a substantial safety hazard in handling licker-in rolls during installation and removal.
The device of the present invention provides means for allowing one personto handle a licker-in roll easily during installation and removal and can be operated by this person from the feed end of the card without any necessity for standing between adjacent cards and thereby substantially facilitates and reduces the hazards of the handling of card licker-in rolls.
The foregoing and other features of the present invention are described in further detail below in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is an end elevation of a lifting device embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device as seen from the right in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a further side elevation opposite to Fig. 2, and showing the arrangement of the removable block mounts for alternatively supporting a licker-in roll being handled on the lifting device;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the lifting yoke elements;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the removable block mounts; and
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the lifting device indicating the manner in which it may be telescoped at the feed end of a card for installing or removing a licker-in roll.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the embodiment of the present invention illustrated comprises an opensided rectangular frame structure having a side section 10 formed in a length exceeding the width of the feed end of a card frame (as indicated by broken lines at C in Fig. 6) and end sections 12 connected adjacent each end of the side section It) in right angular relation thereto and formed in a length sufiicient to reach beneath the axis of a licker-in roll (as indicated in broken lines at R in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 6) when the frame structure of the lifting device is telescoped in surrounding relation at the feed end of the card frame C.
Each of the end sections 12 is formed with a vertical guideway at 14 at a position alignable beneath the axis of the licker-in roll C, and a pair of yoke members 16 having identical shank portions 18 formed as lifting racks are slidably disposed in the guideways 14. The yoke members 16 are further formed with respective head portions 20 and 22 shaped for lifting support at the input and output pulleys P and P for the licker-in roll R, these lifting heads 20 and 22 being arranged with suitably differing curvatures to correspond with the differing radius of the input and output pulleys P and P.
The yokev members 16 are actuated from the lifting racks at the shank portions 18 thereof through rack gears 24 supported on each of the end sections 12, and a worm and worm wheel drive 26 is supported on the side section 10 for driving connection from an operating handle 28 through a side section cross shaft 30, beveled gear pairs 32, and end section shafts 34. Accordingly, the yoke members 16 can be readily controlled from the operating handle 28 by one person. The frame structure formed by the side section 10 and end sections 12 is suitably mounted on casters 36 so that it may be readily moved in telescoping relation with respect to the feed end of a card frame C as indicated in Fig. 6 for positioning the yoke member head portions 20 and 22 in alignment with the. licker-in pulleys P and P for lifting the licker-in roll R clear of the card frame C or setting it in place as desired. In this connection, it should be noted that the yoke member shank portions 18 are removable upwardly from the end section guideways 14 merely upon disengagement from the rack gears 24, and that as these shank portions 18 are identical the yoke members 16 are interchangeable between the guideways 14 for handling either hand of licker-in. roll R (i. e., a roll R having the input pulley P at either the right or left hand end thereof).
It should also be noted that the previously described vertical guideways 14 for the yoke members 16 are arranged exteriorly on the end sections 12, and that block mounts 38 are removably arranged interiorly of the end sections 12 in vertical alignment with the guideways 14 for alternatively supporting a licker-in roll R at the roll body thereof, so that the pulleys P and P may be removed from the licker-in roll shaft whenever necessary while the roll R is being handled on the lifting device of the present invention. These block mounts 33 are hinged for shifting a lowered inactive position and an elevated roll supporting position, as indicated in Fig. 3, and the means provided for removably supporting the block mounts 38 comprises mounting brackets formed with upper horizontal arm portions 44 and bracing arm portions 42 depending angularly therefrom, with the free extending ends of these arm portions removably attached to the and sections 12, as at an upper anchor bracket 44 and a lower locating pin 46. The block mounts 38 are suitably hinged on the horizontal arm portions 41 adjacent the bracing arm portions 42 so as to swing inwardly of the end sections 12 to their lowered inactive position, and to stand on the horizontal arm portions 4i? at their elevated roll supporting position at which the support of a licker-in roll can be transferred readily thereto from the yoke members 16 (see Fig. 3).
The present invention has been described in detail above for purposes of illustration only and is not intended to be limited by this description or otherwise except as defined in the appended claims.
