My invention relates to improvementsl in roasting spits for meats and the primary object thereof is to provide a device of this character for attachment to the oven of the usual gas range,

5 as permanentequipment thereof, and which will in no way interfere with the ordinary use of the oven, and is power-driven with the operating parts hidden from view.

Other objects more or less ancillary to the labove are also comprehended by my invention all'of which together with the precise nature of my improvements will be readily understood when the following description and claims are read Awith reference to the accompanying drawings.

Reference being had to the drawings by numerals, the basic element of my invention is a substantially rectangular frame I extending horizontally along the back wall 2 of the oven 3, on the outside thereof, at any desired height and comprising a pair of flat front and rear frame bars 4 and 5, preferably of iron, and secured together in opposed laterally spaced relation Aby bolts 6 and spacing sleeves 1. Frame I is secured to the back wall 2 by suitable stove bolts 'l' passing through said rear wall and the front frame bar A plurality of spindles 8 are rotatably mounted in the frame I to extend transversely thereof with their opposite ends journaled in said bars 4 and 5 respectively. The spindles are provided with enlarged front end cylindrical sockets 9 extending through the back wall 2 by way of suitable apertures therein and not shown. Preferably three spindles 8 are provided one at each end of the frame I and the other in the longitudinal center of said frame. The center spindle 8 is preferably somewhat above the level of the others for a purpose presently clear. Removably mounted in the front of the oven 3 to extend across the same parallel with the frame I is a skewer supporting bar I8. The mounting for the bar I comprises a pair of keeper blocks Il, secured, as by screws I 2,. to opposite side walls of the oven 3 and having bifurcated upper edges I3 in which the opposite ends of the bar I0 are fitted said ends being undercut, as at I4, to fit snugly between said blocks. Extending inwardly of the oven 3 from the inner face. of the bar ID is a plurality of keeper sockets I opposite the sockets 9, respectively, in axial alignment therewith and for a purpose presently explained. The sockets I5 have open tops, as at I6, and conical seats I1 in the inner ends thereof.

The sockets 9 and I5 form pairs of opposed front and rear supports for the front and rear ends of a plurality of skewer, or spit bars, I8 preferably of iron and extending transversely across the oven 3. Skewer bars Il are designed to be removably mounted at their rear ends in the sockets 9 for coupling to the latter and for hinging movement thereon. To this end each socket 9 is provided with a key pin I9 extending dametrically therethrough and a flaring frontl end 2.0, and the rear ends of the skewer bars I8 are formed to fit loosely in the sockets 9 and provided with a pair of right angularly related key slots 2| therein whereby said bars may bc inserted in said sockets 9 over said pin for` hinging movement thereon. The front ends 22 of the skewer bars I8 are pointed to lay in the front sockets I5. Slidably mounted on each skewer bar I8 is a cross bar carrying a pair of short skewers 23.

To facilitate insertion of the rear ends of the skewer bars I8 in the sockets!! a guide bar 25 is secured, by the bolts 1' to the front frame bar Il against the inner face of the rear wall 2 of the oven 3, said bolts 'l' passing through lugs 26 on said guide bar. The guide bar 25 comprises V- shaped sections 21 underlying the sockets 9 for guiding the rear ends of the skewer bars I8 toward said sockets.

The skewer bars I8 are driven in unison by a drive as follows:

Each spindle 8 has fast thereon a sprocket wheel 28. A sprocket chain 29 is trained around the sprocket wheels 28 of the end spindles 9 with its upper run trained over the sprocket Wheel 28 of the intermediate spindle. A motor 30 is operatively connected to one end spindle 9 by means of a sprocket and chain drive 3| extending between the armature shaft 32 of said motor and said spindle. A guard plate 33 extends from the rear frame bar 5 over the sprocket chain 29 and the intermediate sprocket Wheel 28 to keep said chain from running ofi said sprocket wheel. In actual practice the frame I, parts carried thereby and the motor 30 and sprocket and chain drive 3| are covered by a suitable casing, not shown.

V Cil Referring to the use of the invention, the skewer bars I8 may be loaded with meat outside the oven 3 and inserted in their proper sockets 9 and I'I, or, said lbars may be swung out of the sockets Il and in the sockets 9 and loaded in the oven if desired. The cross bar 23 and skewers 24 may be used to advantage to keep heavy pieces of meat from turning on skewer bars I8. Upon starting of the motor, by the usual controls, not shown, the skewer bars I8 are revolved for the usual purpose which being Well understood may notbe entered into herein. When it is desired to use the oven in the ordinary way, the skewer bars I8 may be removed by first lifting their front ends 22 out of the sockets I'I and then withdrawing their rear ends from the sockets 9. The supporting bar I may then be lifted out of the keeper blocks II to clear the front of the oven.

My invention will, it is believed, be clearly understood from the foregoing Withoutv further explanation.

It is to be understood however that the invention as described is susceptible of modification without departing froml the inventive concept and right is herein r'eserved to all such modifications falling within the scope of the subjoined claims.

What I claim is:

l. 'Ihe combination with an oven, of a roasting spit comprising a rectangular frame removably secured to the rear Wall of the oven on the outside thereof in horizontal position with one side thereof against said Wall, a plurality of spindles rotatably mounted in said frame transversely thereof, said spindles being spaced apart longitudinally of said frame and having front ends extending into said oven, abar removably mounted in the front part of the oven parallel with said frame and having a plurality of sockets on the rear face thereof opposed to said spindles, respectively, and provided with open tops, a plurality of bar-like skewers having rear ends detachably coupled to said spindles for rotation thereby and vertical hinging movement thereon and front ends fitting into said sockets for removal vertically through the open tops of the latter, and a motor drive for rotating said spindles in unison.

2. The combination with an oven, of a roasting spit comprising a rectangular frame removably secured to the rear wall of the oven on the outside thereof in horizontal position with one side thereof against said wall, a plurality of spindles rotatably mounted in said frame transversely thereof, said spindles being spaced apart longitudinally of the frame and having front ends extending into said oven, a bar removably mounted in the front of the oven parallel to said frame and having a plurality of sockets on the rear face thereof opposed to said spindles, respectively, and provided with open tops, a plurality of bar-like skewers having rear ends detachably coupled to said spindles for rotation thereby and vertical hinging movement thereon and front ends fitting into said sockets for removal vertically through the open tops 0f the latter, a guide bar secured to the inside face of the rear wall of the oven and having V-shaped sections underlying said spindles to facilitate location of the rear ends of the skewer bars in coupling relation to said spindles, and a motor' drive for rotating said spindles inv unison.

3. The combination with an oven, of a roasting spit comprising a rectangular frame removably secured to the rear wall of the oven on the outside thereof in horizontal position with one side thereof against said wall, a plurality of spindles rotatably mounted in said frame transversely thereof, said spindles being spaced apart longitudinally of said frame and having front ends extending into said oven, a bar removably mounted in the front part of the oven parallel with said frame and having a plurality of sockets on the rear face thereof opposed to said spindles, respectively, and provided with open tops, a plurality of bar-like skewers having rear ends detachably coupled to said spindles for rotation thereby and front ends fitting into said sockets for removal vertically through the open tops of the latter, and a motor drive for rotating said spindles in unison.
