The present invention relates generally to machines for working metal in the form of sheets or plates, More particularly the invention relates to that type of metal working machine which serves to carry out or effect a hanging operation and embodies: (1) a C-shaped combined housing and supporting structure; (2) a lower shaftwhich isl disposed at the outer extremity or end of the bottom arm of the structure and extends upwardly and outwardly at approximately an angle of 45 with respect to the horizontal, a vertically movable head at the outer end of the top arm of the structure;v (3) an upper shaft on the head which extends .inwardly and downwardly at substantially a 45 angle and has its inner end disposed normally over and adjacent the outer end of the lower shaft; (4) power driven mechanism including gearing and drive shafts within the structure for conjointly driving the upperA and lower shafts in opposite directions; (5) a pair of complemental, coacting flanging rolls which are mounted on the upper and lower shafts, respectively; and (6) a flanging hold-down attachment, in the form of a pair oi arms which have rollers thereon for holding down and preventing upward bulging of the central portion of the work vduring drive and operation of the Hanging rolls.
One object of the invention is to provide a metal working machine of this type which is .an improvement on, and lhas certain advantages over previously designed machines for the same purpose, and is characterized yhy the fact that it includes a novel mount whereby the flanging holddown attachment is supported so it may be quickly and readily adjusted with respect to the flanging rolls. f
Another object of the invention is to provide in connection with a metal working machine of the type under consideration a flanging holddown attachment of new and improved' form.

In connection with a anging operation the disc-like work piece rotates due to rotation of the rolls and thus the entire margin of the piece is formed into a downturned right angle flange at the conclusion of the fianging operation. Thel attachment I0 serves as a medium for preventing upward deection or bulging of the central portion of the work piece during flanging of the margin of the piece. It is in the form of a unit and consists of a horizontally elongated saddle type bracket 64, a shaft 65, a pair of sleeves 66 on the shaft 65, a pair of arms 61 on the sleeves, and a plurality of rollers 68 on the arms. The bracket 64 extends transversely across the bottom arm I6 of the combined housing and supporting structure l2 and has vat the ends thereof downwardly facing grooves 69 of semi-circular cross section for slidably receiving the upper portions of the guide rods 41 and 48. bolted to, the ends of the bracket 64 and these have upwardly facing grooves 1I of semi-circular cross section for slidably receiving the bottom portions of the two guide rods 41 and 48. As shown in Figure 5, the upper ends of these set screws are adapted to engage the flats on the bottom portions of the guide rods. The groves 69 at the ends of the bracket 64 and the upwardly facing grooves 1I in the cap members 1-6 define cylindrical, open-ended sockets which are of slightly greater diameter than the with use of the attachment I0, tobe slid back and forth on the guide rods into any desired position. The shaft 65 is disposed above, and in parallel relation with, the saddle type bracket 64 and is supported for vertical adjustment by way of a pair of eye bolts 13.' The latter comprise eyes and depending threaded shanks and 4are located at the ends of 4the bracket 64. The eyes of the eye bolts encircle the ends of the shaft 65 and form bearings whereby said shaft is permitted to rock back .and forth The Shanks of the eye bolts extend loosely through apertured lugs 14 on the ends of the saddle type bracket 64 and carry upper nuts 15 and lower nuts 16. The upper nuts rest on the-upper surfacesof the lugs 14.and the lower nuts serve as lock nuts. loosening Athe lower nuts 16 and conjointlyturning the upper nuts 15 vertical adjustment ofthe shaft 65 may be eifected. When the, shaftis I vertically adjusted to the desired extent tightening of the lower nuts 16 will lock it in place against vertical displacement. The sleeves 66 are mounted in spaced relation on the central portion of the shaft 65 and are held against rotation relatively to the shaft by way of keys 11 which are connected to, and project outwards from, the shaft and t within keyways .18 in the sleeves. The key and keyway connections between the sleeves and the shaft permit the sleeves to be adjusted to and from one another while maintaining the sleeves against rotation relatively to the shaft. The rear portions of the sleeves 6.6 are provided with set screws 19 for locking the sleeves against longitudinal movement on the shaft and the front portions of the sleeves'are provided with forwardly extending, substantially horizontal lugs 80. The arms 61 of the langing hold-down attachment IIJ normally extend hori.- zontally. They project forwards from the sleeves 66 and have the rear ends thereof positioned yon top of the lugs 86. Vertically extending bolts 8| extend through aligned holes in the ylugs .80 and the rear ends of the arms 61 and form pivots whereby the arms may be swung to and from one another (see Figure 4). When the bolts 8l, are tightenedthe arms are clamped in place. When such bolts are loosened the arms may be 4swung to or from one another,` as previously pointed out. The outer ends of the arms 61` are.` in the form of spindles and serve. rotatably to support the rollers 68. `Preferably each arm 61 is provided with a longitudinal series, of abutting rollers. Collars 82 are mounted on the extreme front ends of the arms 61 and serve to hold the rollers in place. When the attachment I Il is-n its operative position, as shown in Figures 4 and 6, the roller carrying arms 61 are located at one side of, but slightly above, the'flanging roll 9 on the shaft I3 and engage the work piece on such roll so that in connection with a flanging operation the central portion of the work piece cannot bulge upwards. In connection with a iianging operation the central portion of the work piece being flanged exerts upward pressure on the rollers tending to rock the shaft 65- in a clockwise direction as viewed in Figure 6. In order releasably to lock the shaft 65 against such rock`k ing movement a latch 83 is provided. This latchA comprises a sleeve 84 and an eye bolt 85. The sleeve is keyed or otherwise flxedly secured to the end of the shaft 65 that overlies the guide rod 41, and has a rearwardly extending lug 86. The eye bolt 85 is disposed beneath the lug 86 and is pivotally supported by a pin 81 so that itmay be swung back and forth between an'operative I lower flanging roll 9.

The pin 81 extends through the eye of the eye bolt 85 and is carried by a pair of laterally spaced upstanding lugs 88 on the end of the saddle type bracket 64 that is beneath the sleeve 84. 'The outer or distal end of the shank of the eye bolt is provided with a lug engaging abutment type nut 89 and this is normally locked-in place by a jam nut B0. `A tension spring 9! serves to urge the eye boltinto'its operative or latching position.` One vend of this springy is connected to a screw` 92 on the eye of the eye bolt and the otherend of.. thespring is anchored to a screw 93 on the bracket 64. In connection with a flanging operation the work piece is properly positioned on the Thereafter the shaft 65 is rocked in a counterclockwise direction as viewed in Figure 6 in order. to bring the rollers 68 into contact with the central portionof' the top surface of the work piece. As soon as the shaft is so rocked the eye bolt :85 is swung vupwards into its operative position wherein the nut 89 underlies the lug 85. After latching of the shaft 65 in place the machine is started and the upper anging roll 8 is fedY downwards by proper turning of the hand wheel 24. During the fianging operation the rollers 68 `prevent upward deflection or ybulging of the central portion of the work piece, as heretofore pointed out. At the conclusion of` a flanging operation the eye bolt 85 is swung rearwards into its inoperative position in order to release the shaft E5 so that it may be rocked in a clockwise direction as viewed in Figure 6 for roller releasing purposes. Adjustment of the nut 89 on the shank of vthe eye bolt 85 serves to vary the locked position of the shaft 65 and the roller carrying arms 61. In order to facilitate swinging of the roller equipped arms for a flanging operation the shaft l65 is provided with a radially extending hand lever 94. The flanging hold-down attachment Hl may be adjusted to function in connection with aV work piece of any'particular diameter or thickness by sliding the bracket 64 either backwards or forwards on the guide rods l1 vand 48, raising or lowering the shaft 65, and shifting the sleeves 66 to or from one another on' the shaft 65. The fianging hold-down attachment may be removed from the mount l0 byreleasing the guide rods ill and 48, then sliding such rods forwards and thereafter Asliding the attachment off the free rear ends of the guide rods. f
The'herein described metal working machine is highly efficient in operation due to the'specific design and arrangement of the ilanging holddown attachment I0 and its mount H. The mount permits of ready adjustment and removal ofthe attachment. The attachment is simple in construction and design and hence may be manufactured or produced at a low cost.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims without departing `from the spirit and kscope of theinvention. v V

In a metal working machine of thecharacter described, the combination with a C-shaped supporting structure, a pair'of -shaftsmounted one at the outer end' ofthe bottom arm of the structure and the other forrvertical adjustment at the outer end of the top arm ofsaid-structure, and having certain fends thereof disposed adjacent one another and provided with complemental coacting flanging rolls, and power driven mechanism for conjointly driving the -shaftsin opposite directions, of a pair of Ahorizontal guide rods mounted on the structure and positioned along and outwards of opposite sides of said bot-v tom arm, and a fianging hold-down attachment comprising a horizontally elongated bracket extended over and across said bottom arm, having the ends thereof mounted on the Irods, and provided with a pair of upstanding eye bolts with the eyes thereof ,aty the top, a horizontal rock shaft overlying and extending parallel to the bracket and having the ends thereof journalled in the eyes of the bolts, a pair of laterally spaced arms connected vto the rock shaft and adapted when the rock shaft is rocked in one direction to assume an operative position wherein they overlie the top surface of a work piece during a HangingY operation, and releasable` means for preventing reverse rocking of the rock shaft whenthe arms' are in their operative position.

In a metal Working machine of the character described, the combination with a C-shaped supporting structure, a pair of shafts mounted one at the outer end of the bottom arm of the structure and the other for vertical adjustment at the outer end of the top arm ofv said structure, and having certain ends thereofdisposed adjacent one another and provided with complemental coacting anging rolls, and power driven mechanism for conjointlydriving the shafts in opposite directions,` ofy a pair of horizontal guide rods mounted on the structure and positioned along and outwards of opposite sides of said bottom arm, and a langing hold-down attachment comprising a horizontally elongated i bracket extending over and across said bottom arm, having the ends thereof mounted on the rods, and -provided with a pair of vertically adjustable yeye bolts with the eyes thereof at the top, a horizontal rock shaft overlying and extendingparallel to the bracket and having the ends thereof journalled in the `eyes of the bolts,

In a metal working machine of the character described, the combination with a C-shaped supporting structure, a pair of shafts mounted one at the outer end of the bottom arm of the structure and the other for vertical adjustment at the outer end of the top arm of said structure, and having certain ends thereof disposed adjacent' one another and .provided with complemental coacting langing rolls, and power driven mechanism for conjointly driving the shafts in opposite directions, of a pair of horizontal guide rods mounted on the structure and positioned along and outwards of opposite sides of said bottom arm, and a anging hold-down attachment comprising abracket extending over and across said bottom arm, having the ends thereof slidably mounted on the rods so that it is shiftable to and from said one shaft, and provided at its ends with a pair of vertically adjustable eye bolts with the eyes thereof at the top, a horizontal rock shaft overlying and extending parallel to the bracket and having the ends thereof journalled ,in the eyes of vthe bolts, a pair of laterally spaced arms having'rollers -rotatably mounted thereon, connected to the rock shaft so that they are adjustable to and from oney another, and adapted when the rock shaftv s rocked in one direction to assume an operative position wherein the rollers thereon overlie and engage the top surface of a work piece during-a Hanging operation, and releasable means for preventing reverse rocking of the rock shaft when the arms are in their operative position.

In a metal working machine of the character described, the combination with a C- shaped supporting structure, a pair of shafts mounted one at the outer end of the bottom arm of the structure and the other for vertical adjustment at the outer end of the top arm of said structure, and having certain ends thereof disposed adjacent one another and provided with complemental coacting flanging rolls, and a power driven mechanism for conjointly driving the shafts in opposite directions, of a pair of horizontal guide rods mounted on the structure and positioned along and outwards of opposite sides of said bottom arm, and a flanging holddown attachment comprising abracket extending over and across said bottom arm, having the ends thereof slidably mounted on the rods so that it is shiftable to and from said one shaft, and provided at its ends with a pair of adjustable eye bolts with the eyes thereof at the top, a horizontal rock shaft overlying and extending parallel to the bracket and having the ends thereof journalled in the eyes of the bolts, a pair of laterally spaced arms pivotally connected to the rock shaft so that they are capable of swinging to and from one another and adapted when the rock shaft is rocked in one direction to assume an operative position wherein they overlie the top surface of a Work piece during a flanging operation, 'and releasable means for preventing reverse rocking of the rock shaft when the arms are in their operative position.

In a metal working machine of the character described, the combination with a C-shaped supporting structure, a pair of shafts mounted one at the outer end of the bottom arm of the structure and the other for vertical adjustment at the outer end of the top arm of said structure, and having certain ends thereof disposed adjacent one another and provided with complemental coacting flanging rolls, and power driven mechanism for conjointly driving the shafts in opposite directions, of a pair of horizontal guide rods mounted on the structure and positioned along and outwards of opposite sides of said bottom arm, and a flanging hold-down attachment comprising a horizontally elongated bracket positioned above and across said bottom arm, having the ends thereof mounted on the rods, and provided at its ends with vertically adjustable upstanding eye bolts with the eyes thereof at the top, a horizontal rock shaft overlying and extending parallel to the bracket and having the ends thereof journalled in the eyes of the bolts, a pair of arms connected to the shaft and adapted when the rock shaft is rocked in one direction to assume an operative position wherein they overlie the top surface of a work piece during a flanging operation, and releasable latch means between the bracket and the rock shaft for preventing reverse rocking of said rock shaft w'hile the arms are in their operative position.

and having certain ends thereof disposed adjacent one another and provided with complemental coacting flanging rolls, and power driven mechanism for conjointly driving the shafts in opposite directions, of a pair of horizontal guide rods mounted on the' structure and positioned along and outwards of opposite sides of said bottom arm, and a flanging hold-down attachment comprising a bracket positioned above and across said bottom arm, having the ends thereof slidably mounted on the rods so that it is shiftable to and from the one shaft, and provided at its ends with vertically adjustable upstanding eye bolts with the eyes thereof at the top, a horizontal rock shaft overlying and extending parallel to the bracket and having the ends thereof journalled in the eyes of the bolts, a pair of arms having rollers rotatably mounted thereon, adjustably connected to the shaft so that they are shiftable to and from one another, and adapted when the rock shaft is rocked in one direction to assume an operative position wherein the rollers thereon overlie and engage the top surface o-f a work piece during a flanging operation, and releasable latch means between the bracket and the rock shaft for preventing reverse rocking of said rock shaft while the arms are in their operative position.

In a metal working machine of the character described, the combination with a C-shaped supporting structure, a pair of shafts mounted one at the outer end of the bottom arm of the structure and the other for vertical adjustment at the outer end of the top arm of said structure, and having certain ends thereof disposed adjacent one another and provided with complemental coacting flanging rolls, and power driven mechanism for conjointly driving the shafts in opposite directions, of a pair of horizontal guide rods mounted on the structure and positioned along and outwards of opposite sides of said bottom arm, and a anging hold-down attachment comprising a bracket positioned above and across said bottom arm, having the ends thereof slidably mounted on rthe rods so that it is shiftable to and from the one shaft, and providedat its ends with vertically adjustable upstanding eye bolts with the eyes thereof at the top, a horizontal rock shaft overlying and extending parallel to the bracket and having the ends thereof journalled in the eyes of the bolts, a pair of arms having rollers rotatably mounted thereon, pivotally connected to the shaft to swing to and from one another, and adapted when the rock shaft is rocked in one direction to assume an operative position wherein the rollers thereon overlie and engage the top surface of a work piece during a flanging operation, and releasable latch means between the bracket and the rock shaft for preventing reverse rocking of said rock shaft While the arms are in their operative position.
