The present invention pertains to a novel hoisting or lifting mechanism of a type particularly adapted for use in garage pits to assist in the assembly or tearing down and removal of heavy and cumbersome parts of the propelling mechanism of automobiles, buses and trucks.
In removing the transmission from motor vehicles, particularly buses, it is ordinarily necessary to hoist it into the body of the vehicle after removing the floor of the same and it is well known that in buses that are running continually the entire vehicle must be regularly overhauled and the transmis sion must be removed in order that access may be had to the same. In removing or assembling the transmission the same must be inclined at an angle in comparison to its normal position and therefore the present invention aims to provide a mechanism that may be moved around under the bus in a pit, the mechanism being equipped with manually operated means for raising or lowering the cradle vertically so that the cradle may be moved to a position where it engages the transmission which is then unbolted so that it rests upon the cradle. The cradle may then be tilted so that the transmission is supported at an angle relative to its normal position after which the cradle may be verti'cally lowered and the transm1ssion removed lVith the above and other ends in view the invention consists in matter hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the present device; 1

Like characters of reference are employed throughout to designate corresponding parts.
The numeral 1 indicates a supporting framework mounted upon caster wheels 2 that are swivelled to permit the framework to be conveniently moved from place to place. The, framework supports vertical ,U guide members 3 that are substantially T shaped in cross section. Slidably mounted in said guide members, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 is a frame member that is formed of four angle irons 4 that are vertically arranged and secured together by strap members 5 and 6. r
A horizontallyextending'shaft 7 is rotatably mounted upon the frame 1 and is equipped with a removable crank 8 that may be placed on either end of the shaft for the 5 purpose of manually rotating the same. A second horizontally extending shaft 9 is rotatably mounted upon the frame 1 and has a gear 10 mounted thereonto mesh with a gear 11 on the shaft 7 so that rotation of the crank 8 rotates the shaft 9.
A pair of cable drums 12 and 13 are mounted upon the shaft 9 and a cable .14 has one end secured to the drum 12. The cable passes upwardly from the drum 12 and over a sheave 15 that is mounted upon and adjacent the upper ends of the guide members 3 on one side thereof. From .the sheave 15 the cable moves downwardly and passes under a sheave 16 that is secured inthe vertically movable frame by attaching it to one of the strap members 6. From the sheave 16 the cable passes parallel to the sides of the slidable frame to the sheave 17 that is secured to the opposite strap member 6 and then passes upwardly over a sheave 18 that is secured to the upper ends of the guides 3,
being located opposite to the sheave 15. From the sheave 18 the cable passes downwardly and under a pulley 19 and then goes no up and-over a sheave 20 adjacent the sheave 18, down under the sheaves 21 and 22 on the slidable frame adjacent the sheaves 17 and 16 respectively, up and over the sheave 23 that is adjacent the sheave 15- and then 5 downwardly sothat the end of thecable may be secured to the drum 13. 7
By rotating the crank 8 the drums 12 and 13 may be rotated to either wind or unwind the cable 14 and thus cause the slidable frame to be raised or lowered. The tendency is, however, for the slidable frame to become angularly inclined relative to a horizontal plane inasmuch as the lifting stress on the cable 14 is first imparted against the sheaves 16 and 22 which tends to cause this end of the frame to raise first. In order to keep the slidable frame approximately level there are provided rollers 24 at the corners adjacent the sheaves l6 and 22 and rollers 25 at the corners diagonally opposite the rollers 24. The rollers are supported in brackets 26 that are mounted on strap members 27 that are secured to the strap members 5 and the rollers engage the outside flanges of the T shaped guide members 8.
Plates 28 are secured to the strap. mem bers 5 by guide members 28 that permit sliding movement of the plates and seccured to the plates is a tube 29 which receives a. post 30 upon a table 31 so that the table may be rotated. Upwardly projecting flanges 32 are formed at the ends of said table and supported therein is a transversely extending shaft 33. A cradle 34 is rigidly secured to said shaft 33 by means of straps or brackets 34 so that partial rotation of the shaft causes said cradle to be inclined relative to a horizontal plane. A depending lug 35 is formed on the shaft 33 and pivotally connected to the lug is a link member 36 by means of which the shaft may be rotated. The link is provided with a series of notches 37 that receive a pin 38 secured in a pair of posts 39 between which said link passes, the link being held against movement when the pin is in one of the slots, thereby" preventing rotation of the shaft 33 and the corresponding movement of the .cradle 34.

To prevent the cradle from being lowered too rapidly there is secured a drum 40 on the shaft .9 and surrounding this drum is a brake band 41 that may be tightened by means of a lever 42 that is pivotally mounted upon the shaft 7. In order to positively prevent lowering of the cable a ratchet wheel 43 is keyed tothe shaft 9 and a pawl 44 is pivoted on the shaft 7 so that when the pawl is in engagement with the ratchet wheelrotation of the shaft 9 and drums 12 and 13 is prevented.
Although a specific embodiment of the present invention has been illustrated and described it is to be understood that various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention, and such changes are contemplated.
What I claim is: I
1. A device of the character described comprising four vertically extending guide members, a frame member slidably received within said guide members, cable and drum means carried by said guide members and engaging said frame member in a manner to move the same vertically, a rotatable member on said frame member, and a cradle pivotally mounted on said frame member.

A device of the character described comprising four vertically extending guide members, a frame member slidably received within said guide members, rollers carried by said frame member and engaging said guide members in a manner to prevent tilting of said frame member, sheaves mounted adjacent the tops of each of said guide members, a drum rotatably supported by said guide members, a cable connected to said.

A device of the character described comprising four vertically extending guide members, a frame member slidably received within said guide members, cable and drum means carried by said guide members and engaging said frame member in a manner to move the same vertically, plates slidably mounted in said frame member, a tubular member carried by said plates, a post received in said tubular member, a table on the top of said post, a rotatable shaft on said. table, a cradle mounted on said shaft, and means for preventing rotation of said shaft.

A device of the character described comprising four vertically extending guide members, a frame member slidably received within said guide members, rollers carried by said frame member and engaging said guide members in a manner to preventtilting of said frame member, sheaves mounted adjacent the tops of each of said guide members, a drum rotatably supported by said guide members, a cable connected to said drum and trained over said sheaves and engaging said frame member in a manner whereby rotation of said drum raises and lowers said frame member, plates slidably mounted in said frame member, a tubular member carried by said plates, a post received in said tubular member, a table on the top of said post, a rotatable shaft on said table, a cradle mounted on said shaft, and means for preventing rotation of said shaft.

A device of the character described comprising four vertically extending guide members, a frame member slidably received within said guide members, cable and drum means carried by said guide members and engaging said frame member in a manner to move the same vertically, a rotatable member on said frame member, a cradle pivotally mounted on said frame member, and means for preventing unwinding of said cable from said drum in a manner to lower said frame member.

A device of the character described comprising four vertically extending guide members, a frame member slidably received within said guide members, rollers carried by said frame member and engaging said guide members in a manner to prevent tilting of said frame member, sheaves mounted adjacent the tops of each of said guide members, a drum rotatably supported by said guide members, a cable connected to said drum and trained over said sheaves and engaging said frame member in a manner whereby rotation of said drum raises and lowers said frame member, a cradle supported on top of said frame member, and means for preventing unwinding of said cable from said drum in a manner to lower said frame member.
10. A device of the character described comprising vertically extending guide members, a frame member, mounted to slide within said guide members, plates slidably mounted in said frame member, a table rotatably supported in said plates, and a cradle pivotally mounted on said table.
11. A device of the character described comprising vertically extending guide members, a frame member slidably received within said guide members, manually operated cable and drum means mounted on said guide members and adapted to raise and lower said frame member, plates slidably mounted in said frame member to move laterally, a table rotatably mounted in said plates, and a cradle pivotally mounted on said table.
12. A device of the character described comprising vertical guide members, a slidable frame mounted in said guide members, a cable for raising and lowering said slidable frame, plates slidably mounted in said frame to move laterally relative thereto, a table rotatably mounted in said plates, and a cradle pivotally mounted on said table.
13. A device of the character described comprising vertical guide members, a frame slidably mounted in said guide members, manually operated cable and drum means for raising and lowering said frame, means for preventing downward movement of said frame, plates slidably mounted in said frame and movable laterally relative thereto, a table rotatably mounted in said plates, and a cradle pivotally mounted on said table.
