Application September 12, 1952, Serial No. 309,329 11 Claims. (Cl. 2016) This invention relates to door construction.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved, swinging door that can be movably attached to a door jarnb or frame without mechanical pivots or metal hinges, yet will swing open safely and easily, even when violent pressure is applied, and will properly close.
Another object is to provide a protector member, used in combination with said door, which protects the mounting for the hinge or attaching portion, from being struck by a truck or other moving vehicle.
A further object is to provide a deflector for a door having a exible hinge as attaching portion, the deector being so positioned that said attaching portion will bear against and conform to the shape of the deector when the door is opened, thus providing a buffer that saves the attaching portion from unnecessary distortion and strain.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, and arrangement such as is disclosed by the drawings. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and therefore, I am not to be limited to the construction disclosed by the drawings nor to the particular parts described in the specification; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims. f *Y Y In the drawings:

Figure 5 is a fragmentary, perspective view of the protector member shown in said Figure 2, illustrating how it is maintained in position.
As illustrated, a door D, has a main body which may be of variaus types of construction. It has a exible, attaching or hinge member 12 having two separate portions 14 as shown, which are made of flexible material such as rubber or fabric, or a combination of various materials. Said attaching portions 14 are shown connected to opposite sides of said body portion 10, as by cement or other well known means, and at the point adjacent the door body they are substantially spaced apart as at 16. They extend towards each other in a direction towards the supporting means for the door, which, as shown is a door jamb or supporting frame J. Said portions 14 are kept separated by a spacer 18 between them, near said jamb I.
Angle mounting members 20 are attached to said jamb J by bolts 22, and these mounting members 20 extend away from said jamb J, and said attaching portions 14 and spacer 18 are held between them by a pin member 24, such as the threaded stud shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, which passes through said mounting members 20,
2,734,234 Patented Feb. 14, 1956 ICC attaching portions 14 and spacer 18, firmly holding these elements together with the aid of nuts 26. Threaded bushings 28, which are of lesser diameter than said nuts, are also used on said pin members 24, to form a part thereof, in some instances, later explained.
Attached to, or forming an integral part of said mounting members 20, are detiectors 30, which are curved or arcuate shape, curving outwardly away from each other. As shown, these dellectors 30 form part of said mounting members 20, and when the door D is opened, in either direction, a said attaching member portion 14 moves against a said deector 30 and assumes the shape of the latter, as indicated by the dash lines in said Figure 2. This deector 30 provides a buffer for said attaching member 12 whereby sudden and sharp distortion of the latter is avoided upon opening the door D. If the door opens in one direction only, then one said deflector 3i) is suicient.
To protect the door D from being struck adjacent its hinge by a truck or moving vehicle, I provide a protector 34 made of strong material, such as steel 1A; inch thick. This protector 34 has a fastener portion 36 held by screws 38 to said jamb I, from which extends diagonally outward the main or buffer portion 40, and therefrom an inwardly extending, holding portion 42. The latter has holes 44 therein into which said bushings 28 extend, the latter being relatively loose therein and normally out of Contact with the outside surface of the bushing. Where it has no bushing, said pin members 24 extend through said holes 44 even more loosely.
Instead of the stud 24 shown in said Figure 2, a bolt 46 may serve as a pin member, as shown in said Figure 3, being held in place by a nut 47. This modified construction has a protector member 48 having a fastener portion 50 attached by screws 52 to said jamb I. It has a buffer portion 54 extending diagonally therefrom, and a curved deflector portion 56 connected thereto and shown as integral therewith in said Figure 3. This deector portion 56 curves inwardly and contacts a said attaching portion 14, and bears against said mounting 20 which does not have a deector portion. As shown in the dash lines in said Figure 3, a said attaching portion 14, when the door is being opened, contacts said deflector portion 56 and conforms in shape thereto.
What I claim is:
l. Door construction comprising a main body, a exible attaching member connected to said main body embodying an extension extending beyond said body, a pair of mount ing members adapted to lic at opposite outer sides of and adjacent said extension each embodying a curved deflector at an end extremity adapted to lie adjacent said extension, and means to attach said extension to said mounting members.
2. Door construction comprising a main body, a flexible attaching member connected to said main body embodying an extension extending beyond the said body, a pair of mounting members adapted to lie at opposite outer sides of and adjacent said extension, and a protector member embodying a fastener portion, a buffer portion extend ing angularly from said fastener portion, and another portion extending from said buffer portion and adapted to extend to a point adjacent said extension portion.

Door construction comprising a main body, a flexible attaching member connected to said body embodying an extension extending beyond said body, a pair of mounting members adapted to lie at opposite outer sides of and adjacent said extension, each embodying a curved deflector at an end extremity adapted to lie adjacent said extension, and a protector member embodying a fastener portion, a holding portion, and a buffer portion between and connected to said fastener and holding portions, and means to attach said extension, mounting members and holding portion together.

Door construction comprising a main body, a flexible attaching member connected Ato said body embodying an extension extending beyond said body, a pair of mounting members, adapted to lie at opposite sides of and adjacent said extension, each embodyinga curved deflector at-an end extremity adapted to lie adjacent said extension, and a protector member embodying a fastener portion, Va holding portion, and a buffer portion between and connected to said fastener and holding portions, anda pin member to extend through and attach said extension, vmounting members and holding portion together.

Door construction comprising a main body, a exible attaching member connected to said body embodying an extension extending beyond said body, a pair ofimounting members adapted to lie at opposite outer sides of and adjacent said extension, means to attach said extension-to said mounting members, and a protector member embodying a fastener portion, a curved deliector portion adapted to lie adjacent said extension, and a buler portion extending angularly from said fastener portion and between and connected to said fastener and curved vdeflector portions.

Door construction comprising a main body, an attaching member connected to said main body embodying two resilient attaching portions attached to opposite sides of said body and each having an extension extending beyond the edge of said body, a pair of mounting members adapted to lie at opposite outer sides of and adjacent said extensions cach embodying a curvedtdeector at an end extremity adapted to lie adjacent said extensions, and means to attach said extensions to said mounting members.

Door construction comprising a main body, an attaching member connected to said main body embodying two resilient attaching portions attached to opposite sides of said body and each having an extension extending beyond the edge of said body, a pair of mountingmembers adapted to lie at opposite outer sides of and adjacent said extensions, means to attach said extensions to said mounting members, and two protector members Veach embodying a fastener portion, a buifer portion extending from said fastener portion and a curved deilector portion extending from said butter portion and being adapted tolie adjacent the said extension nearest thereto and beyond the free end of a said mounting member.

A door in combination with door supporting means, said door comprising a main body, a flexible attaching member attached to said main body embodying an extension extending beyond the edge of said door, a pair of mounting members embodying portions attached to said doori-supporting-means and other-portions at angles thereto lying alongside outer opposite sides of said extension, a plurality of pin members holding said exible member and mounting members together, said pin members extending beyond the latter, and a protector member adjacent to but spaced from said mounting embodying a holding portion having a plurality of holes therethrough into which said pin members loosely extend to thereby help maintain said protector in predetermined position.

Door construction comprising a main body, two attaching members connected to opposite sides of said main `body each embodying a flexible extension extending beyond said body, a pair of rightiangle mounting members each embodying a portion adapted to lie at an outer side of and adjacent a said extension and another portion extending at a right angle to the inst-mentioned portion adapted to be attached to a door supporting frame, and means to attach said first-mentioned portions to said extensions.

Door construction comprising a main body, two attaching members connected to opposite sides of said main body and each embodying a resilient extension portion extending beyond said body, a pair of mounting members adapted to lie outside of and adjacent said extensions, and means to attach said extensions to said mounting members, each said mounting member having outwardly curved, free ends, opposite to and extending away from said extension portions.

A door in combination withdoor supporting means, said door comprising a main body, two attaching members connected to opposite sides of said main body and each embodying a resilient extension portion extending beyond the edge of said body, a pair of angular mounting members vembodying portions attached to said door supporting means and other portions at angles thereto lying alongside outer opposite sides of said extension portions, and means attaching said other mounting member portions and extensions together.
