SAFETY RAZOR BLADE HOLDERS Filed June 22, 1955 Maw-"5414, mwgwm Inverztor W/LLIAM LEW/S Attorney United States Patent SAFETY RAZOR BLADE HOLDERS Application June 22, 1953, Serial No. 363,307
6 Claims. (Cl. 206-16) This invention concerns holders for safety razor blades.
I have found that razor blades which normally lose their keenness after a few days, will maintain a good sharp edge for several weeks without any stropping or sharpening if air is excluded from the edge by its immersion in oil or grease or powder, such as tale. It appears that the loss of keenness is largely due to the formation of minute rust particles on the blade edge.
It is the object of the invention to provide holders for blades in which they may be kept between use with their edges protected by a protective substance and from which they may be removed clean and ready for use.
Holders according to the invention have a body made in one or more parts, a slot or slots in the body for the insertion and removal of a blade, at least one receptacle for protective substance to encompass the blade edge or edges and wiping means in the withdrawal path of the blade edge to clean off adhering substance and return it to its receptacle.
The invention may be applied to holders for single or double edged blades. In the former case a holder having an open ended slot may be used for the insertion and withdrawal of a blade. In the latter case a simple slide may be used to carry a blade into and out of the holder.
The wiping means may preferably be constituted by strips which engage the blade surfaces from either side upon its withdrawal. These strips are preferably made of oil and grease resistant material such as synthetic rubber or they can be made of wicking or like woven strip where a powder is used.
The above and other parts of the invention are embodied in preferred forms of holder which will now be described in some detail by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a holder developed for single edged blades.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line IIII of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a holder having a slide and adapted for use with double-edged blades.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line IVIV of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line V-V of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a top view of an alternative form of holder for single edged blades.
Fig. 7 is a section on the line VII-VII of Fig. 6.
A simple form of holder for single edged blades is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2; it comprises a body of plastic, metal or other suitable material having a suitably shaped slot 1 somewhat longer than a normal razor blade formed at its centre between its two halves 2 and 3 and extending into a cylindrical chamber 4 which runs substantially the full length of the body.
The slot 1 and the chamber 4 are both open at one end. The slot is preferably flared at its end to provide for easy insertion of a blade longitudinally of the body,
and the chamber is threaded at its open end to receive a stopper plug 5.
Synthetic rubber wiping strips 6 are held on opposite sides of the slot 1 just outside the chamber in suitable grooves. The edges of the strips 6 protrude from the grooves and meet each other over a length corresponding to that of a blade, but are totally enclosed in the body at the entrance end of the slot so as to provide easy entry for a blade.
A blade ejector slide 7 is fitted in a slot 8 in the half 2 of the body. Its blade contacting end is inserted through the slot 8 before the two halves of the body are cemented together and is turned through to lock it in assembled position.
In use the chamber 4 is filled with a protective substance, which may be oil or grease (such as petroleum jelly) or suitable powder, the cap 5 is screwed home and a blade is inserted longitudinally of the body through the flared slot in its end; the edge of the blade enters the lubricant chamber.
When required, the blade is removed transversely of the body through the narrow slot by the operation of the slide 7 and as it is removed its edge is wiped clean by the synthetic rubber strips 6, which contact it on both faces.
In a form of holder developed for two edged blades illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the blades are inserted and removed on a carrier 9 through one end. Protective substance chambers 4 and wiper strips 6 are provided on either side of the body 2, 3 and the strips 6 are brought into the path of the blade surfaces near the entrance to the chambers.
The carrier 9 may be a plastic strip provided with locating pins 10 for the blade and may slide in and out of a longitudinal slot 11 on the body.
The chambers 4 are filled through their ends on removal of caps 5.
Another form of holder for single edged blades is illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7, it is similar in construction, but the body is formed in two parts 2 and 3 pivoted together on a longitudinal axis 12 and so formed as to define between them a narrow slot closed at both ends by wings 13 formed on the part 2.
In this form, the two parts of the body can be swung back about the pivot to permit the insertion of a blade and closed together once it is inserted.
The two parts are maintained together on removal of the blade so that wiper strips 6 are effective to clean the faces of the blade edge.
It will be understood that the invention is not restricted to the details of the specific embodiments described which may be varied without departing from the broad ideas underlying it.
I claim:
1. A safety razor blade holder for double edged blades, having a substantially rectangular body, a slot in an end wall of said body, a pair of receptacles for protective substance formed in said body near the longitudinal sides thereof, said receptacles affording inwardly facing narrow slots and each being sealed by a pair of circular sectioned wiping strips which have parts in the withdrawal path of a blade adapted to clean the edges thereof on its withdrawal and to retain the protective substance within the receptacles.
2. A safety razor blade holder according to claim 1 wherein the said wiping strips are held in oppositely disposed grooves in said body.
3. A safety razor blade holder according to claim 1 Wheete'in a slidable member shaped to hold a blade is fitel 9 a to b slidabl hroug the slotted nd all of the body. i
4. A safety razor blade holder according to claim 1 wherein the said wiping strips are bent outwardly at the ends thereof adjacent the slotted end wall. 7
5. A safety razor blade holder according to claim 1 wherein the protective substance is oil.
6. A safety razor blade holder according to claim wherein the protective substance is a powder. 7
