Description

NrTED STATES PATENT Clarion.
CLARENCE WV. HOBBS, OF DEERING, MAINE.
Box.
'srcIFIcATIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,278, dated March e, 1883.. Application nieu september 2o, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE W. HOBBS, of Deering, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a plan of the body of the box. Fig. 2 is a` plan of the cover.
Same letters show like parts.
My invention relates to paper boxes of that kind that are made by cutting and creasing a sheet ofthick paper, and then bending, folding, and joining` the parts according to such cuttings and creasings.v My box-body is made of one sheet of board or paper, and the cover is made of another piece.
A is the body-blank.
B is the cover-blank.
a is the bottom of the box-body. It is creased on the inner side all around on the lines b. This is effected by a pressure brought to bear on the inner side, so as to compress the paper on the lines b, and thus make itsure to bend on those lines.
c c show the sides. They are folded up on the lines b to an upright position. Each side has the vertical slits d.
e are the end pieces. They are folded up to an upright position on the lines b. They have ears f, which have tongues g, each with the two notches h. The end pieces are brought to an upright position, the ears j' passed around the edges and outside of the side pieces, c c, and the tongues g entered into the slits d. The slits and notches 7L form a secure fastening for theends to the sides.
The box is of exceedingly simple construction, and the method of securing the sides and ends together does not present any projecting edge ot the paper to rub against any object, and so tear and destroy the box.
The cover is constructed in the same way as the body. The only difference is that tle side and end flaps or pieces are narrower, being made wide enough only to lap down over the outside ofthe box-body a sufiicient distance.
Instead of the ears fand the two tongues g on the 'end pieces, c, the sides may b e furnished with flaps to go around and outside of the end pieces. In this case one of the aps will have the tongue and ears and notches, and the other the vertical slit before described as placed at the ends of the sides. Then the tongue ot' one ldap is simply inserted into the vertical slit of the other, and the body of the box becomes united. The same is applicable to the top.
It will be seen that my box is held together at the locking parts by the full strength ofthe paper, the edges of the notches h coming in contact with the edges of the vertical slits.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
The combination of box and cover herein described, both being cut and creased and joined or folded in the same way, and each consisting of the bottom or top a, creases b, sides c c, vertical slits d, end pieces, e, ears j', and.
tongues g, with notches h, the two being made into box and cover, as herein set forth.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own Iafx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE HCBBS.
