UNITED STATES PATN T FFTGE.
SAML. J. SHAWV AND H. J. BATCHELDER, OF MARLBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
LANTERN-CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
Be it known that we, SAMUEL J. SHAW and HAZEN J. BATOHELDER, of Marlboro, in the county of MiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Lantern- Carrier or Apparatus for Firing a Lantern to the Breast or Body of a Person; and we do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l, is a top view; Fig. 2 a front elevation, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of such apparatus and a lantern supported y it.
In the said drawings, A, exhibits the lantern as provided With a hook, B, to enter a socket, 0, applied to the front side of a shield or breast plate, D. This shield is furnished with a curved arm or strut, E, extended from it, as shown in the drawings, and having one end of an elastic band or strap, F, affixed to its outer extremity. The other end of such strap or band is furnished with a hook, a, suitably formed to hook in to one of a series of holes, Z), I), 6, arranged in the breast shield as shown in Fig. 2.
In using the said apparatus, the part or shield D, is to be placed against the left breast and close to the shoulder of the person, and the strut is to extend underneath his left arm, the upper edge of the strut bearing against the vertex of the angle made by the arm and the body. The elastic strip is to be carried across the back and over the 27,315, dated February 28, 1860.
left shoulder of the person, and is to be hooked into some one of the holes, I), b, b. The strap will not only connect the breast plate to the body, but will draw the strut up under the arm and thus the strut and the strap by cooperating serve to maintain the breastplate in proper place on the breast, while at the same time they allow of the easy play or movement of the left arm in any direction.
The breast plate constitutes not only a bearing for, or supporter of, the socket of the lantern, but serves as a shield or reflector to prevent the heat of the lantern from burning or scorching the persons dress.
The above described means of applying a lantern to the body is far preferable to any device for supporting a lantern on the arm of a person, as it leaves both arms free to move independently of the lantern.
For conductors of railway trains, or for miners or others, the above improved lantern carrier will be found to be of great utility.
e therefore claim The lantern carrier constructed as described and for the purpose of supporting a lantern against the breast of a person and having both arms free to be moved in any direction.
