2 Claims. (Ci. 33-478) This invention relates to improvements in caps for gages, and has for an object the provision of a cap which is permanently attached for covering gages to provide complete protection of a gage from injury at all times.
A further object is the provision of a permanently attached gage cap which can be easily and quickly removed to an out of the way position to enable free use of the gage.
A further object is an anti-rust lining in the inside Wall of the gage cap.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view, partly in section, as indicated by line 1-1 of Fig. 2 of a device embodying the invention and covering a gage.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a side view showing the cover moved to a position to enable free use of the gage.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a gage 1, for example a thread plug gage, which is mounted on a gage holder 6, which is surrounded by a collar or clamp 3 having at one side thereof a hook 4.
Fixed to the upper side of the collar 3 is a tubular cap 2 preferably made of rubber or a similar flexible material and having a hollow wall in which is positioned a compression spring 20, the upper end of the hollow wall being closed and limiting the upward movement of the spring as shown in Fig. 1, in which the cap is shown in a position covering the gage.
Attached to the upper end of the cap 2 is an eye 5. While the gage is described as being a thread plug gage, it obviously could be any type of gage.
In operation, when it is desired to use the gage, the flexible cap is pressed down to compress the spring and to enable eye 5 to engage the hook 4 to hold the cap 2 in a position uncovering the gage to enable unhampered use of the gage.
The above description is to be considered as illustrative and not limitative of the invention of which modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
The invention having been described, what is claimed is:
1. In combination with a gage having a holder, a collar clamped about the holder, a hook projecting from one side of the collar, a cap of flexible material such as rubber attached to the upper side of the collar and having a hollow wall, a compression spring housed in the hollow wall of the cap, and an eye attached to the upper portion of the cap and arranged to engage said hook when the cap is depressed against the action of the spring to uncover the gage.
2. The structure set forth in claim 1 in which the cap is tubular and the hollow wall is closed at one end to limit upward movement of the spring, said cap extending above the uppermost part of the gage when the eye is released from the hook.
