JAMES A. HAY AND JOHN RALSTON, OF SLIPPERY ROCK, PENNSYLVANIA.
DELIVERY-ROLLER FOR CIRCULAR-SAW MILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,072, dated February 2'7, 1883.
Application filed June 6, 1882.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES A. HAY and J OHN RALSTON, of Slippery Rock, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Delivery-Roller for Circular-Saw Mills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists of an improved arrangement of the delivery-rollers over which the lumber passes for delivery from the saw after being separated from the log, the object of which is to enable the log to be supported a little in advance of the saw as well as in rear of the cutting-edge, forsustaining the log against shifting by the thrust of the saw when it enters the end of the log, and also for holding up the ends of the pieces cut off to prevent any changes of stress on the log at the moment when the separated pieces are detached, and thus enable the logs to be held more securely, and the lumber to be delivered better than with the common delivery-roller arrangement, as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of the saw and saw frame of a circular-saw mill with our improved delivery-roller attachment, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. i A represents the bed-frame, B the arbor, and O the saw, of a circular-saw mill for slitting logs or cants to make siding, flooring, planks, studding, joists, andother forms of marketable lumber.
D and E represent a pair of delivery-roller guides which we propose to employ for the delivery of the lumber along andaway from .of its proper position on the carriage.
the saw when being separated from the log, which passes to the right hand of the saw on a carriage, (not shown,) while the boards or other forms cut off from the log pass to the left-hand of the saw over these rollers, which are to support the cut pieces, holding them up, so as to prevent them from sagging and straining on the log with a tendency to turn it out Commonly a single roller is located on the sawframe at or about the rear edge of the saw, so that the overhang of the log is unsupported when the saw strikes it and until the sawed [piece reaches the roller, and when the log passes the saw and the piece is entirely separated from it the overhanging end of the said piece is unsupported, so that in the first place the log is liable to shift by the stress of the saw when it strikes the end of the log, and it is also liable to shift when the piece is detached, or shortly before, by the stress of th e piece before the separation, or by the change of stress afterward, if not supported evenly with the support by the head-block. WVe therefore propose to locate roller D a little in advance of the cutting-edge of the saw, so that itwill give support to the log on that side of the saw where the saw strikes the log, and roller E a little back of the cutting-edgeto support the pieces at the point where they are separated from the log, and thus prevent the shifting of the log in both cases.
We mount the rollers on the head F of a sliding bar, G, fitted between guides H, attached to the side of the saw-frame, so that the rollers D E may be adjusted to the proper height, and we connect the bar G to the crank I of a rock-shaft, J, by a rod, K, to be shifted by a lever-arm, L, that may be used to press the roller up to the log by hand or other suitable means, and to shift the rollers down out of the way, when required,as indicated by the dotted lines. 7
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a saw-mill, the combination, with a circular saw, of two rollers, D E, arranged on a head, F, placed at one side of the saw, with the roller D projectingfarther forward than the saw,and the rollerE between thecutting-edge and the center of the saw,,as shown and described.
2. .The combination, in a saw-mill, with the slide-bar G,carrying a head having rollers for supporting the sawed-off lumber, of the rod K, rock-shaft J, having crank I, and the lever-arm L, all arranged substantially as shown and described.
