UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE A. MCDONALD, OF NEW ALBANY, INDIANA.
GAGE FOR RIP-SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,913, dated November 21, 1882, Application filed August 18, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE A. MCDON- ALI), of New Albany, in the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Gagefor Rip-Saws, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to gagesused principally with small circular saws on a saw-table where boards or planks are ripped up into strips of various sizes; and it consists of a lever-and-link contrivance for holding and moving the gage-bar, whereby the bar may be easil y and quickly moved to its different positions and its parallelism with the saw always maintained. The gage-baris attached to the lever by means of a link, and it may be provided with guiding-arms to run through guide-passages in a stationary block to keep it parallel with the saw, or it may be attached to the block by swinging links, as desired. In case swinging links are used, the lever will by preference be bent so that the handle end thereof will always be convenient to the attendant. The outer end of the leveris adapted to engage with a notched plate for holding the lever and "gage-bar at any desired position.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan. view of a saw-tableand ripsaw, the table having my new and improved gage. Fig. 2 is aplan view, showing the moditied form of my new and improved gage, the gage-bar being provided with guide-arms and connected to the lever with a single link; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the notched gageplate for holding the lever.
A represents the saw-table; B, the circular rip saw; 0, the gage -bar, and 1) the lever, which is fulcrumed at its outer end upon the bolt or pin a, that passes down through the lever and through the block E, which is bolted fast to the table A parallel with the plane of the saw B.
In the form of gage shown in Fig. 1 the lever D is bent, as shown at c, and the gage-bar O is a plain bar of wood or iron of suitable length, and is connected tothe block E by the links G G, which are of equal length and hold the bar parallel with the plane of the saw, while in the construction shown in Fig. 2 the gagebar is formed or provided with the guide-arms dd, that pass through the guide-passages c e of the block E, for holding the gage-bar always parallel with the plane of the saw.
H is a link which connects the lever D with the gage-bar O, and J is the notched plate, with which the lip i of the lever D is adapted to engage for holding the lever and gage-bar at any desired position.
Thus constructed, it will be seen that in order to set the gage to difierent positions it is only necessary to raise the rear end of the lever D slightly to disengage the lip t'from the notches ofthe plate J and move it one way or the other, which will move the gage-barO accordingly parallel with the plane of the saw; and it will be seen that this settingot' the gage-bar may be done, even though a board or plank be on the table for sawing, so that in case the board or it plank does not come out even the gage may be easily set to work the lumber to the best advantage without any special exertion or loss of time on the part of the attendant.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pa tent- In a saw-gage, the combination, with the slidinggage-bar U, the parallel bars G, and the fixed block E, of the lever D, the link H, connected to the gage-bar O, and directly to the lever D, inward from the pivotal point of the latter, and the rack J, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
THEODORE A. MODONA Ll).
