- CIRCULAR SAWING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,637, dated Felruary 5, 1881.
Application filedDccemher 14, 1883. (ModoL) 1'0 all? whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. KAUTZ, of Emporium, in the county of Cameron and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Sawing-Machine, of which the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in certain improvements-in that class of circular sawing machines in which the saw-frame is automatically swung into position Winyandthfifhtlifb'llfii is also automatically 61 rated, as will be hereinafter set forthand el" l1 Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved cutoff saw, with part a of the table-top removed. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the machine on the line w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on liney y, Fig. 1.
The circular cut-off saw a isarranged on the swinging frame I) under the table 0, as is usual in such machines, to swing up in front of the feed-rolls d e, to cut off boards, whieh are fed along over the saw by the said feed-rolls,when the saw is swung down below the surface of the table. The frame bis fixed on a pivot at f, on which there is a pulley, g, from which a belt runs to the pulley h on the saw-arbor i, said pulley 9 being driven by a belt from the large pulley j, or from any other approved" driver.
Toraise the saw automatically, I arrange a cam-shaft, 7.1, under the saw-frame b, with a cam, Z, on it acting against the under side of y the saw-frame, and gear the said cam-shaft k with the shaft on of the driving-pulleyj by the pinion a on the shaft m gearing with the large wheel 0 on the camshaft, by which the sawframe will be raised up and let fall once for each revolution of the cam, which is properly speeded for the purpose; and to feed up the stuff to be sawed automatically also, I-fix another eam, p, on the shaft 7;, and set oppositely to cam lto act on a lever, g, which is pivoted to the frame at s, and is connected at its free end with an endless chain, 1, running over an idler, a, and also over a loose pulley, e, on the shaft of the lower feed-roll, d, and having a ratchet, 10, attached to it, which ratchet en- .keyed to the shaft of the feed-roll.
gages the pawl a when the lever q is raised by the cam p, and turns the feed-roll forward, the pawl so being connected to a disk, y, that is WVhen the lever q falls, the pulley o and ratchet w are shifted back preparatory for another forward movement.
The pawl is pivoted to the disk y at z, and has a spring, a, to hold it in contact with the pawl for the forward movement, .and to yield and allow the pawl :0 to escape from the notches of the ratchet when the ratchet turns back.
The weight of the lever q causes said lever to shift the ratchet back.
By the arrangement of the cams Z and 1) epposite to each otherithe saw rises when the stuff to be sawed varies in "thickness, and will make said frame sufficiently heavy to press the stuff down on the lower feed-roll, so as to insure the feeding of it properly by the lower feed-roll. Both of said feed-rolls are tobe armed with pointed disksf, for adhesion to thewood. A rope may be substituted for the chain tby connecting one end with lever q, passing the rope under roller a, thence up over pulley v, andthence downward, with a weight hanging by it to produce the required tension; but the lever must be heavier than the weight to pull the ratchet back.
Having thus fully described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination,witl1 the lever q,piv0ted at s to the frame, and connected at its free end to the chain t,which passes under an idler be low the lever, and over a chain-pulley 011 the shaft of the feed-roller at above the lever q, of the cam p,mounted on shaft k, for operating lever q, and devices connected therewith, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the feed-roller cl, on the shaft of which is mounted loosely a chainpulley, v, having secured thereto a ratchetdisk, 20, and also a disk rigidly secured to said shaft (1, and carrying a spring-pawl,with the chain t,
7 low the table, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the shaft 7c, provided with the cams l p, the former for operating the swinging saw-frame and the latter for operatingthepivoted lever q, connected with the chain 1, passing under idler u and over loose chain pulley 1), on the shaft of the feed-roller d,with the fixed disk on said shaft carrying the fixed ratchetw and its spring-pawl,and suitable gearing for operatingthe shaft 7; and the saw, substantiallyas set forth.
4. The combination of the shaft k, carrying the cams I 12, mounted, respectively, 'below the swinging saw-frame and pivoted lever 11, and said shaft k, also provided with cog-wheel 0, with the shaft m, provided with pinion n, gearing with wheel 0, and with adriving-pulley for operating said shaft m and the pulleys g h on the saw-frame shaft and saw-arbor respectively, by belts passing over the same, substantially as set forth. I
v GEORGE J. KAUTZ. Witnesses:
