SPECIFICATION forming. part of Letters Patent No. 272,756, dated February 20, 1853.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES A. PARK, of Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of fill Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in buckles adapted for use upon hame-straps, breast-straps, or other parts of a harness, the object being to provide a buckle which may be readily applied without sewing or riveting and adjusted or removed, as desired.

The invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims. I

In the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal central section of the buckle applied to a strap, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the buckle, and Figs. 3 and 4. represent the parts of the buckle detached.

A represents the frame of the buckle, whose sides are upwardly turned, as shown, and provided with end bars, a a.

B represents a cross-bar arranged adjacent .to and parallel with the end bar a to form a tuck-loop, b. 0 represents an under loop, formed integral with the frame.

D represents a cross-bar arranged approximately at the center of the frame, and formed on one side with a shoulder, d,and at the opposite side with two parallel arms or wings, E E. The upper side of the frame is recessed at the points 0 e to form bearings for a pivotal bail.

Frepresents the bail,consistingofthecurved frame f and pivotal bar f. Said bar f is seated in the bearings e e of the frame, and is pivotally secured to the frame by bending the arms or wings E Earound said bar. The free end of the bail is provided with a downwardlyprojecting hooked pin or stud, G.

H represents a tongue pivotally secured to the barf of the bail by bending it around said bar between the arms E E of the frame.

My improved buckle is applied to'astrap in the following manner: One end,m, of the strap is passed over the cross-bar D of the frame,

and under the free end of the bail to engage the hooked pin G. The other end, or, of the strap is then passed under the cross-bar B. The shoulder d of the central cross-bar, D,

serves as a seat for the bend m of the strap,-

and prevents the disengagement of the strap and hooked pin G. The end :10 is then passed through the under loop, 0, of the frame, and under the end bar a to engagethe tongue H, and is secured by the tuck-loop b.

It will be apparent that the buckle thus de; scribed may be readily applied without riveting or stitching, and may be readily adjusted and removed when desired. It will also be observed that its construction is simple and durable.

Having fully described my invention.what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a buckle, the combination, with a frame provided with upwardly-turned ends, and a cross-bar provided with arms or wings, ofa pivotal bail secured by said arms, and provided with a downWardly-projecting hooked pin and a pivoted tongue, substantially as set forth.

2. In a buckle, the combination, with aframe having upwardly-turned ends, and a shouldered cross-bar provided with arms or wings, of a pivotal bail secured by said arms and provided with a downwardly-projecting hooked pin,and atongue pivoted to said bail between the arms of said cross-bar, substantially as set forth.

3. In a buckle, the combination,-with a frame provided at one end with a tuck-loop andwith an under loop,'recessed bearings, and a shouldered cross-bar provided with arms or wings, of a bail having bearing in the recesses of the frame, pivotally secured to the latter by bending said arms around its piv otal bar, and provided witha downweirdly-projecting hooked pin and pivotal tongue, substantially as set forth.
