rIt is the purpose. of. .thepresent invention toprovide a Qpaper cap .orarticle of head .wear .which whiledequately fulfilling the purposes for which itis., adapted to be used is so formed that rit-may be retained in place by a U- .shaped hoop-like securing member., normally..oncealed in the folds of the article, the construction and mounting of the device enables the same to apply suicient pressure to the head of the wearer to retain the device in its operative position and yet will avoid disarranging the wearers hair or causing physical discomfort.

A. still further object of the invention is to provide a novel securing means for paper articles of head wear which may be readily inserted into or removed from an associated article, permitting the fastening appliance to be used repeatedly for successive articles as the latter are worn and minimizing expense in the use thereof.

Each of the tabs d is formed with a transverse slit l0, which is adapted to register with the slits 11 shown as formed in the lower portions of each of the sides 2. In addition to the slit 1l., the lower end of each of the sides 2 is formed with another parallel slit l2.

When the tabs are turned upwardly, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the slits 10 and lil are in registering order. This permits the ends of the positioning and fastening hoop 7 to pass through the registering slits il? and 1l from the inside of the article to the outside thereof, as shown more particularly in Fig. 5, and the extreme lower ends of the hoop are then inserted in the lowermost of the slits 12, being confined in a pocket 13 formed in the extreme lower portions of the article between the sides 2 and the upturned tabs 8.

In the use of the article, it is a very simple matter to fold the paper blank from which the article is formed by bending the ap 3 inwardly so that it is disposed below the top portion 1a of the crown band l, and to bend the tabs 8 upwardly rso that the slit 10 in each thereof registers with the body slit 11 of the article. The securing hoop or member then has the intermediate portion thereof inserted beneath the web 6 by being passed through the slits of the aps 3, and the ends of the hoop or securing member are then trained through the slits 10, 11, and 12 so that the same are disposed in and protected by the materials forming the pockets 13. Due to the resiliency of the hoop or fastening member the sides thereof may be spread apart as the article is positioned upon the head of the wearer. Upon releasing the spread-apart sides, the same respond to the inherent resiliency of the material from which they are formed and engage the sides of the wearers head with sufficient rmness to positively retain the associated article in its applied position.

This construction avoids the necessity of employing elastic bands or tapes in the securing of such articles as set forth in my aforesaid application, eliminating the objections to the elastic fastening elements and on its own behalf providing a simple, eliicient and concealed fastening means which does not disarrange the hair of the wearer nor cause any binding or cutting action, as is apt to occur when elastic bands comprise the fastening means. The hoop may be readily inserted in the paper articles or removed therefrom, so that it may be used repeatedly, thus minimizing the cost of utilizing paper articles of head wear as contemplated herein.

The articles shown in Figs. 5 and 6 possess substantially the same features of construction as that illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, with the exception that the web 6 has been omitted. While this arrangement positions the central portion of the hoop between the part 1a of the crown band and the ap 3, the latter is allowed to assume an operating position more closely approximating the plane of the wearers head, as will be apparent by reference to Figs. 2 and 6. In the modification disclosed in Fig. 4, in lieu of employing the slits 10, 11 and 12, the tab 8a is merely folded upon the sides of the crown band and adhesively secured thereto, leaving a pocket as disclosed at 13a in which the lower ends of the hoop 7 are removably received.

It will be noted that in both forms of my invention, the part 1a of the crown band projects upwardly at an angle. In use, suitable indicia is adapted to be printed or otherwise applied on this upstanding portion of the article, such as the name of the commercial establishment in which the article is worn.

In view of the foregoing, it is believed that the construction and advantages of my improved article of head wear will be readily understood by those skilled in the art, and therefore a more extended explanation has been accordingly omitted.

I claim:

l. An article of head wear comprising: a disposable band of freely flexible sheet material, said band being formed to possess a generally arched formation providing a crown flap and an internal, laterally offset continuation constituting a positioning flap, the latter being integrally joined with inner intermediately disposed edge regions of the crown flap by a fold line which terminates at the opposite ends thereof in outwardly diverging slits separating the crown and positioning aps at the ends of the latter and enabling the article when folded for use to extend across the top of the wearers head and downwardly against its opposite sides, the article being open at its front and back, with the positioning flap folded inwardly of the article beneath and within the confines of the crown flap, said crown flap terminating at its opposite ends in inwardly foldable tab regions, the latter being provided with pocket-forming slits adapted for registry with corresponding slits formed in the ends of the crown ap when the tab regions are inwardly folded against the ends of the crown flap; and a bowed, head-engaging and clamping strip having resiliently separable legs, said strip being separable from said disposable article for repeated usage in connection with other substituted articles and being formed so that when applied to a given article the same is disposed between said crown and positioning flaps, with the lower ends of the separable legs of the strip engaged with said slits and held against displacement by the same, whereby to cause said strip to apply inwardly directed forces to the article in resiliently clamping the same on the wearers head.

An article of head wear as defined in and by claim 1, wherein said positioning flap is formed intermediately thereof with web-forming slits for the reception of the intermediate part of said bowed clamping strip in positively retaining said intermediate part of the strip against displacement with respect to the crown ap and the positioning ap between which the strip is disposed.

3. An article of head wear as defined in and by claim 2, wherein the intermediate region of the band-like body of the article is formed with a pair of spaced, parallel, webproducing slits for the reception of contiguous intermediate portions of said clamping strip, whereby to preclude displacement of the strip relative to the article body with which it is joined.
