Description

UNITED STATES e. M. ELIGE, on
IMPROVEMENT PATENT OFFICE..
NEV YORK, N. Y.
IN PAINT-CANS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 27,265. llatd July 28, 1360.
York, have invented a new and useful Im,
provementin Cans for Putting Up Paints, &c.; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speciticatiomin which- Figure l represents a vertical cent-ral section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same.
Similar letters of reference in the three views indicate corresponding parts.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will scribe it.
A represents a can, made of tin or any other suitablel material, and of a cylindrical or any other desirable shape. It is furnished with a cover, B, that fits nicely over the top edge of the can, and a handle, C, which is secured to two pivots, D, serves to carry the can from place to place. The pivots D are rmly attached to the sides of the can, one opposite to the other and near to its top edge, and they form necks c for the handle to work in. The handle is bent in the forni of an ellipse, so as to iit close to the side of the can when turned down, and to allow the cans to be packed close together it' it is desired to send a number of them to a distant place. That portion of the pivots D beyond the necks c forms a boss, b, each of which forms a socket for a swivelcatch, E, and these catches are so arranged that they turn over the cover B, as clearly proceed to de l shown in the drawings, and that they force the same down tight on the top edge of the can. XVhen these catches are turned out to side of Fig. 2, the cover can be removed without difficulty. Instead ot'attaehing said swivel-catches to the pivots D, they may be secured in separate projections or to any other convenient part on the side of the can, and when two of those catches are not considered sufficient three or more may be applied. It will be easily understood, however, how in all cases my swivel-catches can be operated with the greatest ease and without injury to any part of the can, and one of my cans may be lilled and emptied any number of times, and still the same catches will serve to fasten down the cover. Vhen the catches E are retained by the pivots D, to which the handles are attached, it is necessary to furnish them with a recess, c, so that they do not interfere with the handle when the saine is brought in a vertical position; or the pivots must be made long enough to allow thev catches to be attached on the inside of lthe handle and between it and the ca n, in which case the handle will move freely both ways.
Vhat l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The employment, in combination with the can A, ot' vt-he swivel-catches E, when constructed and arranged as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
