4 Claims. (Cl. 30-284) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in knife gauges, particularly for slicing meat, vegetables, bread, etc., and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means whereby slices of any desired uniform thickness may be rapidly cut.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide an adjustable slicing gauge of the character described which may be expeditiously mounted on the usual blade of a conventional carving or slicing knife and which, when in position, will stiften or rigidify said blade.
Other object-s of the invention are to provide a slicing knife gauge of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View, lshowing a gauge constructed in accordance with the present invention mounted on a knife;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view, taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view, taken substantially on the line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference character 5 designates a conventional carving or slicing knife. The knife 5 includes the usual blade 6 provided with a cutting edge 7 and having mounted on one end thereof a suitable handle 8.
The embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a channel bar 9 of suitable metal which is mounted longitudinally on the back of the knife blade 6. Toward this end, one flange or leg of the channel bar 9 has formed therein at longitudinally spaced points threaded openings 10 for the reception of angular setscrews 11 for detachably securing said channel bar in position on said blade. The rear end portion of the bar 9 further includes a depending tongue 12 extending adjacent one side of the blade 6 and having threaded therein an angular setscrew 13 for further securing the gauge in position on the knife.
Formed integrally with the channel bar 9 and projecting laterally from the end portions thereof is a pair of brackets 14. The brackets 14 are provided with slots 15. A substantially U-shaped guide rod 16, which substantially parallels the cutting edge 7 of the blade 6, is removably and adjustably mounted on the brackets 14. The guide rod 16 includes threaded end portions 17 which are adjustably engaged in the slots 15. Briefly, the metallic channel bar 9 is slipped on the back portion of the blade 6 and secured by tightening the setscrews 11 and 13. By inserting setscrews selectively in the spaced openings 10 in the bar 11, a bent or warped knife blade may be straightened. Of course, the rod 16 i-s engaged with the end of the product to be sliced to space the blade 6 the desired distance therefrom, as will be obvious. When a piece of meat, for example, is to be cut, the end from which the slice is to be removed is positioned on the end portion of the cutting board or block to prevent interference with the rod 16 which, it will be observed, is below the horizontal plane of the cutting edge 7. To adjust the gauge laterally for slices of a desired thickness, it is only neces-sary to loosen the wing nuts 19, shift the rod 16 in the slots 15 and again tighten said wing nuts. Vertical adjustment of the guide rod 16 relative to the blade 6 may be accomplished by threading the nuts 18 and 19 upwardly or downwardly on the end portions 17 of said guide rod. To turn the segmental nuts 18, the guide rod 16 must be moved a suicient distance away from the blade 6 to provide clearance.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation as shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A slicing knife gauge of the character described comprising: a channel bar to be mounted longitudinally on the back portion of a knife blade, a pair of brackets projecting laterally from said bar at spaced points, said brackets having slots therein, a substantially U-shaped guide rod extending substantially in parallelism with the cutting edge of the blade and having its end portions engaged in the slots for vertical and horizontal adjustment, and means on said end portions engageable with the brackets for releasably securing the rod in adjusted position.
2. A slicing knife gauge of the character described comprising: a channel bar to be mounted longitudinally on the back portion of a knife blade, a pair of brackets projecting laterally from said bar at spaced points, said brackets having slots therein, a substantially U-shaped guide rod threaded on the ends and extending substantially in parallelism with the cutting edge of the blade and having its end portions adjustably engaged in the slots, and means on said end portions engageable with the brackets for releasably securing the rod in adjusted position, said means including nuts threadedly mounted on the end portions of the rod and engaged beneath the brackets, and wing nuts threadedly mounted on said end portions of said rod and cooperable with the first named nuts for frictionally clamping the brackets therebetween.

A slicing knife gauge of the character described comprising: a substantially channel-shaped bar for mounting longitudinally on the back portion of a knife blade, said bar having longitudinally spaced openings in one side thereof, setscrews threadedly mounted in the openings and engageable with the blade for frictionally clamp-l ing said bar in position on the blade, brackets projecting laterally from the end portions of the bar, and a metallic guide rod adjustably mounted on said brackets and substantially paralleling the cutting edge of the blade.

A slicing knife gauge of the character described comprising: a substantially channel-shaped bar for mounting longitudinally on the back portion of a knife blade, said bar having longitudinally spaced openings in one side thereof, setscrews threadedly mounted in the openings and engageable with the blade for frictionally clamping said bar in position on the blade, brackets projecting laterally from the end portions of the bar, and a 2l metallic guide rod adjustably mounted on said brackets and substantially paralleling the cutting edge of the blade, said brackets having slots therein, said guide rod being substantially U-shaped and having its end portions adjustably secured in the slots.
