(Cl. 31-27) This invention relates to a cutting device and has special reference to a device for cutting cheese, butter and the like, into slices of predetermined thicknesses.
More particularly, this invention relates to a cutting device comprising a frame having a cutting member disposed thereacross and a guide roller mounted to rotate therein, the guide roller being adjustable relatively to the outing member to predetermine the thickness of the cut and the frame being adjustable of itself to tension the cutting member.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a outing member in the form of a wire held under tension between two arms of an adjustable frame member, the latter being operated in a very simple manner to stretch the wire taut. The cutting member is held in a fixed relation to the frame and this manner of assembly, to the best of applicants knowledge, is contrary to similar existing structures. The frame, which is preferably formed integrally with the handle portion of the device, is capable of being spread sufficiently to allow for any reasonable amount of adjustment in the cutting member and the operation of the frame into its adjusted positions may be accomplished simply by means of a common screw member.
It is the further contemplation of this invention to predetermine the thickness of the cut by adjustably mounting the guide roller relatively to the fixed cutting member in a simple and expeditious manner, each of the-bearings for the roller comprising a nut guided in a slot in the frame and a screw member for engaging the nut to frictionally position the bearings with respect to a desired adjusted position on the frame.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a cutting device in which the depth of cut is predetermined by means of a guide roller adjustable with respect to a fixed cutting member.
Another object of this invention is to provide a cutting device in which the frame thereof is adjustable to tension the cutting element, the latter being fixed to the frame.
A further object of this invention is to provide a cutting device which is simple and expeditious in operation, is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and is durable.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter be more particularly pointed out and for a more complete understanding of the characteristic features of this invention, reference may now be had to the following description when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which latter:
Figure 1 is a top plan view partially in section of the device of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of Figure 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the cutting element showing its operation in connection with a brick of cheese; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the elements of the guide roller positioning means.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the device of this invention comprises a substantially U-shaped frame member 10, having a handle 11 preferably formed integrally therewith, the frame and handle in this instance being die cast. It is, of course, to be understood that the frame and handle elements may be formed of separate elements, the handle 11 being formed of wood, sheet metal, or any usual type detachably connected to the frame and the latter being cast or formed of sheet metal in any desired manner.
In the illustration the handle portion comprises a hollow casting which is split from one end thereof to a point near the other end by means of the groove 12, the frame portion 10 being likewise split centrally of the connecting portion between the arms by a continuation of the groove 12 therethrough in order that the two parts of the frame be adjustable or movable relatively to each other. This movement is provided by means of a screw 13, the latter extending through and threadedly engaging one portion of the handle 11 and abutting the handle member on the opposite side of the slot 12 in order that when tightened there will be a spreading action of the frame. The screw element 13, therefore, tends to distort the frame member out of its normal position and when loosened permits the frame to return to its normal retracted position.
A cutting member 14 is disposed between the arms 15 of the frame and passes through slots 16 on the lower edge of the arms at a oint near the free ends thereof to permanently fasten to a pin 17 on the arms of the frame. The wire 14 is, therefore; fixedly engaged with the frame member between the arms thereof. The cutting member 14 is preferably formed of a fine steel wire preferably a piano wire and in use should the same become stretched, tension may be placed thereon by means of spreading the frame member by tightening the screw 13. In this manner, but a simple adjustment is necessary to keep the cutting member taut.
A guide roller 18 is mounted to rotate between the arms 15 and the frame member 10 and is so mounted as to be adjustable relatively to the fixed cutting member 14 to predetermine the thickness of the out to be made upon the cheese, butter, or the like. The guide roller 18 is provided with axial apertures 19 at each end thereof for receiving a bearing portion 20 of a screw 21. The screw 21 has a threaded portion 22 for threadedly engaging a nut 23, and in order that the latter be held against rotation, it is provided with a flattened oblong reduced projecting portion 24 for snugly engaging a slot 25 extending horizontally within the arms 15 of the frame 10. The nut 23, by reason of its being guided in the slot 25, permits of a movement of the guide roller 18 in a direction toward and away from the cutting member 14.
When it is desired to position the guide roller 18 for cutting a piece of cheese of a predetermined thickness, the screw members 21 on each end of the frame are loosened and the nuts 23 are set at predetermined positions determined by a scale on each of the arms such as are illustrated in the drawing, the nut being preferably provided with an arrow which may register with one of the marks on the face of one of the arms 15, the other nut being set in a corresponding relation to the other of the arms. The screw members 21 are then tightened to draw the shoulders of the nuts 23 formed by the reduced extension against the sides of the arms 15 and the head of the screws on the opposite side of the arms so as to produce a sufficient amount of friction to prevent movement of the guide roller excepting when the screws are subsequently loosened.
In cutting a slice of cheeseor other like commodity, the guide roller 18 is held against the end of the cheese and the cutting member 14 engages the top of the cheese at a predetermined thickness, the assembly being moved downwardly and the wire passing through the cheese for the cut. The roller acts to preserve the distance throughout the length of cut by being urged against the end of the cheese.
While but a single embodiment of this invention is herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various modifications thereof may be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention and, therefore, the same is only to be limited by the scope of the prior art and the appended claims.
We claim:
1. A cutting device comprising a frame, a cutting member fixedly attached to opposite sides of said frame, a guide roller for engaging the end of the substance to be cut, and bearingmembers movable with respect to said frame, said roller being rotatably mounted in said bearing members and adjustable thereby to predetermine the depth of cut. i

A cutting device comprising a frame, a cutting member fixedly attached to opposite sides of said frame, a guide roller for engaging the end of the substance to be cut, and bearing members guided in slots on opposite sides of said frame, said roller being rotatably mounted in said bearing members and adjustable relatively to said fixed cutting member to predetermine the depth of cut. v
3. A cutting device comprising a frame, a cutting member flxedly attached to opposite sides of said frame, a guide member for engaging the end of the substance to be cut, and bearing members slidably mounted on said frame, said'guide member being mounted in said bearing members and thereby adjustable relatively to said fixed cutting memberto predetermine the depth of cut.
4. A cutting device comprising a frame, a cutting member fixedly attached to opposite sides of said frame, a guide member for engaging the end of the substance to be cut, and bearing members slidably mounted on said frame, each of said bearing members comprising a pair of cooperating clamping members for frictionally engaging said frame, said guide member being mounted in said bearing members and held thereby in a desired position to predetermine the depth of cut.
5. A cutting device comprising a frame, a cutting member fixedly attached to opposite sides of said frame, a guide member for engaging the substance to be cut, and bearing members for said guide member, each of said bearing members comprising a threaded nut having slidable engagement with said frame member and a screw for threadedly engaging said nut to urge a fixed relation with said frame in a desired position to predetermine the depth of cut.
6. A cutting device comprising a frame, a cutting member fixedly attached to opposite sides of said frame, a guide member for engaging the substance to be cut, and bearing members for said guide member, each of said bearing members comprising a threaded nut for movably engaging an aperture in said frame and a screw for threadedly engaging said nut to urge a fixed relation with said frame in a desired position to predetermine the depth of cut.
7. A cutting device comprising a frame, a cutting member iixedly attached to opposite sides of said frame, a guide member for engaging the substance to be cut, and bearing members for said guide member, each of said bearing members comprising a threaded nut having a reduced extension for engaging an aperture 'in said frame and a screw for threadedly engaging said nut, said reduced extension forming a shoulder on said nut for engaging the face of one side of said frame and said screw having a head for engaging the face of the other side of said frame whereby a tightening of-said screw in said nut urges a fixed relation of said bearings and thereby said guide member with said frame in a desired position to predetermine the depth of cut.
8. A cutting device comprising a U-shaped frame, a cutting member fixedly attached to the arms of said frame, a guide member on said frame for engaging the end of the substance to be cut to predetermine the depth of cut, said frame being slotted to permit of movement of said arms relatively to each other, and a screw for threadedly engaging a portion of said frame on oneside of said slot and bearing against another portion on the other side of said slot to adjust said arms thereby permitting a desired tensioning of said cutting member.
