TOY.
Patented Feb. 13,1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAVVR EXCE F. SMITH, OF BOSTOX, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIUXOR TU CHARLES ALBERT SHAW, OF SAME PLACE.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,168, dated February 13, 18E 3.
.-\ Indication filed December 13, l?
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, LAWRENCE I SMITH, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have inven ed a certain new and useful Improvement in Toys. of which the following is a description sullieiently lull, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or seieni-e to which said invention appertains to make and use the same refer- IO enoe being haul to the ueeompanyiiu, drawings, forming a part of this speoilieation, in whioh Figure 1 is an isometriral perspective view showing the toy in use, and Fig. 2 a seotional side elevation.
Like letters of referent-o unlit-ate correspondin; putts in the dill'erent figures oi' the drawings.
My invention relates to that elass oi toys in which there is an innige designed to repte sent a child or person using a swing; and item]- sists in a novel oonstrnetion and arrangement ofthe parts,as Ina-rinalter morelully set forth and claimed, by which a simpler, cheap r, and
2 more amusing aitiole of this eharaoter is prodneed than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and (illt'lllilflll ot' the improvement wiil be readily understood by all eonversant with such matters from the following ex- 0 planation, its extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
In the drawings, A represents the body or base, 13 l the standards or uprights. and C the cross-liar, which is provided on its t1[i]lrl' side with the shallow groove HI. i
A ball, I), having two legs or pins, (2 a, of equal length, is provided with a long'downwardlyprojeotingeurved wire, E, and disposed above the cross-bar 0. At the loner end of 40 the wire there is achair or sent. G, containing an image, H, representing a child or person in a swing, as shown in Fig. l.
(X0 model:
The pins a a and chair (r may be substituted by any other devices that will perlorin the same functions.
The groove in may also be omitted, if desired.
In using the toy the points or ends of the pins or legs a (t. are placed in the groove in, to prevent them from slipping from the bar 0, and the image swung bank and forth, as indicated by the dotted lines J, the hall acting: as a omenter-balanee to the ehair (r and image ll, thereby rendering it neressary to use but: little three in operating the swing, and rousing it to continue its vibrations for a great length of time after being once started up.
It will be obvious that the eruter of motion is at the point. of eontaut between the legs a u and bar U, and that the eenteroi gravity isat the chair (l. in order. therefore, to obtain the best results ill the working oi the toy the wire I) should be bent in such a. manner that it will clear the bar U, and so that the center ofgravity will be brought directly under the Ctfhfei of motion. the legs a u at the same time standing in a vertical position.
It is preferable to make the standards detachable from the bed or base, and also from the cross-bar, to militate packing for transportation.
ll wing thus explained my invention, what I claim is The im n'oved tov described, the same consisting of the framework A B C, ball I), pins a a, wire E, chair (i, and image lLooinbined and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
LAWRENCE I SMITH.
