CARD-SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,120, dated February 13, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. creme, Jr., of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oard Supports, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to an improved support for advertising-cards, easels, vases, and other devices; and the invention consists of the combination, with an advertising-card or other article, of a brace or support, the upper end of which is bent diagonally across its I body and attached to the card or other device,

so that the body of the brace extends at right angles to the body of ,the card. The lower part of the brace or support 'is provided with a pocket for inserting a thin weight to impart greater stability to the device.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved support for advertising-cards, easels, and the like. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the device with the support folded against the back of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed views of the support detached.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A in the drawings represents an advertising-card, easel, plaque, vase, or other article used for advertising or ornamental purpose, and B a support or brace by which the same is supported in upright or inclined position. The brace B is applied to the back of the easel A by bending the upper end of the support on a line extending diagonally across the top part of the brace, the bent portion B being either divided by a lateral slit into two parts, of which one part is bent to one side and the other part to the other side of the brace, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, or the entire end portion, B, may be bent to one side of the brace,

as desired, as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3. The bent portion B is glued or otherwise attached to the back of the card or other article, so that the brace'B is thereby located at right angles to the body of the card when supporting the same, as shown in Fig. l, but parallel thereto when folded over toward the body when being packed for storage or shipment. The lower part of the support B is provided with a pocket, b, into which aflat piece, 0, of lead is inserted, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to be retained thereby. In place of a pocket,

slots or perforations may be used to retain the .at right angles to or weight; The weighting of the lower end of the brace imparts a certain degree of stiffness to the card when supported in upright position.

By connecting the brace, in the manner de- 'strip adhering thereto, as in the latter cases the brace readily bends and slides on, so that the card or other device is liable to tumble over, which can never occur with my improved construction. To impart a still more reliable support to the lower edge of the brace,.it is provided with laterally-extending flaps (Z d, that are glued or' otherwise attached to the lower part of the brace by a middle piece, 01, which is bent in U shape around the brace, as shown in Fig. 1. The side flaps, d d, are readily folded in the same plane as the brace when the latter is placed flat against the back of the card or other device.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a card or other article, of a supporting brace or stay, the up per part of which is bent sidewise on a line diagonal to the body of the brace, said bent portion being attached to the back of the card,

so as to form a hinge integral with the brace, whereby the same may be placed in position parallel with the body of the card, as described.

2.The combination, with a card or other device, A, of a supporting-brace, B, that is applied by a diagonally-bent portion, B, at 4 its upper end to the back of the card, and provided at the lower end with a pocket or other suitable retaining device, 11, and a steadyingweight, 0, substantially as specified.

3. The combination, with a card or other article, A, of a supporting-brace, B, that is applied by a diagonally-bent portion, B, at its upper part to the back of the card, and provided at the lower end with laterally-extending flaps d d, substantially as specified.
