Oct. 4, 1955 L. H. HAASE JEWELRY DISPLAY CASE Filed Nov. 22, 1952 INVENTOR. Lama/m: hf flaws:
United States Patent JEWELRY DISPLAY CASE Lawrence H. Haase, Evansville, Ind., assignor to Kent Plastics Corporation, Evansville, Ind., a corporation Application November 22, 1952, Serial No. 322,016
2 Claims. (Cl. 206-4513) This invention relates generally to jewelry display cases and more particularly to display boxes for wrist Watches.
It is the conventional practice to provide watch display boxes consisting of a box having a pad in the bottom thereof with built-up portions adapted to receive a wrist watch with its face in an upward position. When such display boxes are used in show windows or the like it is necessary to look almost vertically downwardly on the watch in order to observe all of the ornamental features of the watch face and case. For this reason wrist watches usually must be displayed along the front edge of the show window or on tilted frames which provide the observer with an adequate view of the wrist watch.
It is the principal object of this invention to provide a watch display box having mechanism operable by opening the cover to support and elevate a wrist watch into a display position.
In accordance with this invention there is provided a watch display box comprising a watch supporting member hinged to a base portion of the box and a strap connected between the cover of the box and the hinged support for elevating the support as the cover is opened.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating a portion of a watch display box on which is mounted the elevating mechanism provided in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross section of a modification of this invention.
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view illustrating the box shown in Fig. 3 in closed position.
Fig. 5 is a cross section of another modification of this invention shown with the box in opened position.
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view illustrating the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 in the closed position.
Referring to the drawings, there is provided in accordance with this invention a wrist watch display box comprising a bottom 10 and a top 11 hinged thereto by means of conventional hinges 14. For supporting the wrist watch and to elevate it into display position there is provided a watch displaying member including a watch band support or socket member 16 having tabs 17 at each end thereof which may be glued or otherwise fixed to the vertical back 18 of the bottom portion 10. The watch band support or socket member 16 may be folded over at its ends to provide pockets 19 at each end thereof, the purpose of which will be described subsequently.
For pivoting said socket member 16 upwardly and downwardly with respect to tabs 17 there is provided a flexible strap 21 attached at its outer end to the mid portion of the socket member 16 as illustrated and glued or otherwise attached at its other end to the vertical back member 22 of box top 11. Strap 21 serves to pivot the socket member 16 upwardly when the box top 11 is opened and to pivot said member 16 downwardly into 2 the position illustrated in Fig. 2 when the top 11 is in the closed position.- I I j For supporting a wrist watch on the socket member 16 there is provided a strap support 25 formed into an oval" configuration resembling the shape of aper'sons wrist whereby a watch and its strap maybe mounte'd over member 25 with the watch face directed toward the front of the box. Member 25 may include tabs suchas-26 of a size-and shape adapted to fit within the sockets 19 of member 16. A watch may be mounted on member 25 and then the tabs 26 may be moved into the slots 19 so that when the box is in its closed position the watch lies within the box and adjacent the bottom thereof. When the cover is raised to the position illustrated in Fig. 1 member 16 is tilted upwardly and raises member 25 and the watch supported thereon into an elevated position at an angle with respect to the bottom of the box so that the watch face may be presented for display in angular relation with the box and so that an observer may see the watch from any position in front of the box.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, there is illustrated a modification of the invention wherein member 16 is connected to the box top 11 by means of a jointed strap 28 formed to have a joint at 29. Strap 28 is connected to member 16 and to box top 11 in the same manner as described in connection with Figs. 1 and 2. Strap 28 may be of such a length that when the box is in its closed position watch support 25 lies firmly on the bottom of the box and joint 29 permits opening of the box top to the extent of a few degrees before member 16 is moved in an upward direction. Thus elevation of the wrist Watch is delayed until the box top 11 has opened to a predetermined degree.
This modification of the invention is also adapted to handle watches of comparatively large size so that the watch may lie on the bottom of the box before cover 11 is entirely closed, the joint or crease 29 permitting complete closure of the top 11 by allowing member 28 to flex.
Referring to Figs. 5 and 6, the member 16 may have a single socket and includes a tab 30 glued or otherwise fixed to the bottom of the box portion 10. Member 16 also includes a strap member 31 jointed or creased at 32 and fixed to the outer end of tab 30. This member 31 serves to limit the upward movement of member 16. Member 16 also includes the strap 21 fixed to the top portion 11 of the display box. In operation member 16 is moved upwardly and downwardly by strap 21 when the box is opened or closed. The strap 31 serves to limit the upward movement of member 16 and in turn to limit the opening movement of top 11 whereby the display angle of the watch is positively controlled and also the upper limit of movement of top 11 is also positively controlled.
The invention claimed is:
I. In a watch display box having a hinged cover and bottom, for supporting a watch displaying member, a support for said displaying member including a hinge member fixed adjacent the hinged side of and to the bottom of said box, a strap member extending from said support to the hinged side panel of said box cover whereby opening and closing of said cover elevates and lowers said receptacle, and a stop strap extending from the bottom of said box to the free end of said support for limiting the elevation of said support and the opening motion of said cover, said stop strap including a transverse crease to provide a fold in said strap when said receptacle "is lowered.
2. In a watch display box having a hinged cover and bottom, a watch displaying member comprising a band member for receiving a wrist Watch strap and including a pair of outwardly projecting tabs, a socket member hav- Patented Oct. 4, 1955 ing pockets adapted to receive said tabs,'a hinge member joined, to one end of said socket member and mounted in hinged relation to the hinge bearing side of the bottom of said box, a strap member extending from said socket membet :to the hinged side. panelofrsaid hex. cover wheneby, opening and closing of said cover elevates and-lewers :said
soeketmember through an acute angle with respect 10. said bottom, and a stop strap extending item. the bottom of said box :to the free. end oiisaid soe-ket member for moving said socket nttembterv through an acute-angle, thereby iting the :elevat-ion'of said soeketrmember and the opening motion of said cover;
