SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,767, dated February e, 1883. Application filed September 9, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom. it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. BATES, of Walton, in the county of Delaware and State of New York. have invented a new and useful.

the'attachment of spreading-sticks to ham to mocks by means more convenient than those heretofore in use, andto insure equal strain on the cords of the hammock. To these'ends I use a stick notched to receive the cords and fitted with a retaining-rod, as hereinafter de- 15 scribed and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

The stick may be made of wood or other suitable material.

- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 50 1. The notched spreading-stick for hammocks, made substantially as shown and described, provided with retaining-rod a, coveringthe notches.

2. The retaining-rod "0, combined with the notched spreading-stick A, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination of notched stick A,eyes or staples b, and rod 13, substantially as shown and described.

4. The pins d,in combination with the spreading-stick A, having end notches,substantially as described.
