`cowleuNl-:D SIETTEE AND LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 271,762, dated February y6, 1883.
^ Application led October 4, 1852. (No model.)
To all whom it'nwty concern:V
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. AMRocK, of Walthaimin the county ot'MiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and other outdoor use.
The invention consists of aframe composed of four inclined bars, having a top bar passing through holes in the upper ends of the inclined bars, and pro/'vided with a. canvas or other suitable flexible material so connected with the `inclined bars as to render it adjustable either "in :['ront or rear, land so as' to form a support for the 4back when used as a settee.
The invention also consists of an adjustable head-rest secured to a cord or rope which acts as a Support tothe longitudinal side rails.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l` is an end view of my convertible settee and lounge. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, showing the attachment of an adjustable awning. Fig 3 is a front elevation. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail views.
A A A' A' represent bars set at an inclination, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
B is a longitudinal bar secured to the upper ends ofthe inclined bars A A', through which the bar B passes, and is secured in place by a pin,'or by means ot'4 a latch andy groove in place of the pin, as shown in Fig. 5.
G AC' aretwo longitudinal bars, which support the canvas or seat .,G, and are connected at the ends to the inclined bars A A' in such a way as to admit ot' their sliding freely on the bars A A. The bars C G' are supported by means of cords D D', which pass through holes in the bar B, and they may also be further supported by means of a hinged bar or pawl, f, fitting in notches g in the bars A, as shown in Fig. (5. A spring-latch may be 'used to act automatically forthe same'purpose. Thus the seat and the back may be ,adjusted higher or lower, 'as desired. y Y
E is a head-rest composed simply of a narrow strip of canvas or other suitable material, at each end of which is a wide hem, in which is inserted a short bar, a hole being made through the canvas and the bars at the center of their length for the cords D D to pass through, by means of which the headrest is supported and rendered adjustable to any inclinationor height, or lowered at either end,
according to the angle at which the bars A A'- are set, and also according to the. position of the bars C C' on said bars A A'. The headrest E is thus always kept in proper position relatively to the canvas G.
At each end ot the top of the inclined bars A A is a bar, H, pivoted or hung at its center to the projecting ends of the longitudinal bar B, so as to swing freely on the same. To these bars His attached an awning, K. To
-each end of the bars H is attached a cord, h,
readily taken apart and the parts folded in a Small compass for packing or transportation',
and when required for use may be readily put together and set up.
Y Under the canvas G, I form a pocket, l, for containing clothes or other articles. This pocket can be of any desired size, and is formed by stitching a piece ot' canvas onto the canvas G, along two sides and one end thereof, and leaving one end or side open, which forms the mouth, and which can be secured by buttons or otherwise.
What I claim as my invention, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, isv y 1. In a combined settee and lounge, the combination of the inclined bars AA', the bar B, the adjustable bars C C', the canvas Gr, or its equivalent, and the cords D D', substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination ot the adjustable pivoted bar H, the crossbar B, the awning K, and cords h h, substantiallyas and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a combined settee and lounge, the
IOO
combination of' the inclined bars A A', the ing-bers A A', substantially as and for the swinging bar H, and the circular bar or plate purpose set forth. H', provided with holes for the insertion ofaJ In testimony whereof I have signed my locking-pin, substantially as set forth. name to this specication in the presence of 5 4. In a. combined settee and lounge, the l two subscribing witnesses.
pocket I in'coxnbiuation with the sent G sub- A Astantielljy as and for the purpose specified. EDWARD S' AMROGK' 5. The adjustable head-rest E, consisting of Witnesses: a single strip of canvas, in combination with Jos. H. ADAMS, 1o the cords D, canvas G, bar B, and support- E. PLANTA.
