GUN-REST.
'SPECIFI CATIONTQrming' part of Letters Patent No. 271,251, dated January 30, 1883.
Application filed September 13, 1882. (N0 model.) Patented in Belgium February 15, 1882. No. 56,997, in Italy March 11, 1882, XVI, 13,919; in Austria-Hungary April 28. 1882. No. 9,199, and in France May 3,1882, No. 147.537.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN ERIK VILHELM Denmark, and FREDERIK DANIEL VoLKER- MW, of Elsinore, in the Kingdom of Denmark, have invented a new and useful Portable Suppatent in Italy, No. 13,919, vol. XVL, hearing date March 11, 1882; in Belgium, No. 56,997, hearing date February 15,1882; in Austria- Hungary, No. 9,199, hearing date April 28, 1882, and in France, No. 147,537, bearing date May 3, 1882,) of which the following is a specitication.
()urinvention relates to improvements in portable supports for guns for soldiers usein battle; and the object of our improvement is to unite a support with the gun, which may occasionally also easily be detached, and enables the soldier during the fire to point the gun at any object with greatest accuracy under any required elevation and distance, and to maintain the gun in the same position as beiore the shot, so avoiding nearly all influence of the recoil. We attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in two modified constructions in the accompanying two sheets of drawings.
The first construction is represented in the Figures 1 to 5.
Fig. 1 shows a rear view olthesupport when spread out. Fig.2 is a section on the line A B, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is section on the line C D, Fig.1. Fig. 4 is a detailed view in perspective of the upper portion of the support. Fig. 5 shows the support put to the gun.
The disk I may be attached to one of the hands a or to another part of the gun. This disk I turns in the block it and round the pin t, which contains in a notch the spring it, pressing outwardly, and thereby securing the pin ii in its hole. After compressing the spring a and pulling the pin 5 out of its hole, the whole support will be disengaged from the gun. In the blocklc are also pivoted the two legs Z1 (3, which may be brought, as shown in Fig. 5, close by the gun and then held together by means of the clamp m, or also spread out,
shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
when turned for use in fight, in the position To the block it is attached by dovetail the spring h, the two branches of which press the cylinders 9 against the eccentric hinge-pieces of the legs 1;. This is effected when the latter are spread out with suflicient power for maintaining the legs under any angle desired with the gun and for avoiding any remarkable recoil afterdischarging the gun. The angle between supportand gun may be made, by pushing forward more or less the gun, smallerorlarger, asrequired. Thisinove- 6o ment is limited by the breast m of the hingepieces. The legs b may be hollow or solid. When hollow, the rods (1 (I, rendering the legs extensible, may slide in them. The spring e, secured to the rod (1, is at its extremities pro- 6 "ided with hooks catching into the notch or recessj in the interior m of the foot I) for securing the rods in one of these two positions.
The second construction is represented by the Figs. 6 to 11.
Fig. 6 shows the front view; Fig. 7, a sec tion on the line J K, Fig. 6; Fig. 8, the upper part of the support; Fig. 9, a section on the line G H, Fig. 8; Fig. 10, asection on the line E F, Fig, 6; and Fig. 11, the support when put to the gun.
a is the band, provided with the disk I, turning in block It round the pivot 2",,fitted with spring 'It. In the block k is pivoted only one leg. I), terminating in the prism W. The spring Ii, attached to the block it, presses the cylinder g against the eccentric hinge-piece of I). On the prism b slides the slide N, in which are pivoted the two legs b I). The two branches of the spring q, attached to 8 the slide b press against one or other of the two edges of the upper parts of the legs I) I), and maintain thereby the legs 0* either in one or other of the two positions. The spring 0,
screwed on slide b may enter one of the notches o s of the prism b These notches are of such form that the support may be lengthened as required, but that before the support can be shortened the nose of the spring 0 must be drawn out of the notch s, which is effected by means of the flange 0, attached to the spring 0.
Having fully described our invention, what I leg I), attached to said block and terminating we desire to claim and secure by Letters Patcut is- 1. The combination of disk Z, attached to a gun, with the block 70, in which said disk turns vertically, the horizontal detachable pin on which said disk turns, and the tripod attached to said head for supporting the gun.
2. The combination of a disk attached to a gun, with a horizontal pin attached to a tripod, and on which said disk .turns vertically, a block which holds said pin, and which ishinged to the supporting tripod, and a spring which operates against the hinges ofsaid tripod, substantialiy as set forth.
3. The combination of. disk Z, attached to a gun, with the block 7:, in which it turns, the
in a prismatic part, b the slide b vertically movable on said prismatic part, the support- 20 ing-legs b b, hinged to said slide, and the spring g, which bears against said legs, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a portable support for guns, the combination of a spring with the hinge of a tri- 25 pod-leg and a cylindrical piece forced by said fspriltlig against said hinge, for the purpose set 'ort JOllN ERIK VILI-IELM LEERBECH. FREDERIK DANIEL VOLKERSEN.
